Lot's of questions
Hi!!
I have recently discovered my fathers side of the family and I find that my G,G,G Grandfather John G Collins married a woman who was supposedly full blood Saponi. He was born in Eastern Tennessee, and his mother was full Chickihomany ( Sorry about the spelling) His wife Susan was useing the name Napier, evidently that was the name of the family she was traveling with, at least that is my understanding.
Question 1. Does anyone know if it was a custom for native americans to adopt anglo names during the 1830's
Question 2. Is there a good web site that explains who the Saponi are. I had never heard of them until my research brought them up.
Question 3. What is the status of the nation today? Where are their lands? How many survive?
Gotta tell you I am quite thrilled to have a connection to even such a tiny one as I have.
Thanks for any help
LD. Collins

Welcome, Warlord.
What documentation have you found that names your ancestors as Chickahominy and Saponi? This is unusual and I'm curious where you found this.
Collins is a common Saponi name. Did you know? Perhaps your ancestor was a Saponi man who married a Chickahominy woman.
Yes, during that period Natives did take Anglo names. Often it was the family they were working for, or on whose lands they were living. Or it could be someone they admired, or a male parent, like everybody else.
You'll find some historical articles on the main page of this site. The Haliwa Saponi site has some info there, as does the Occaneechi Saponi.
There are several state recognized groups who claim descent from the Saponi. There's the Haliwa Saponi, the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi, and the Person County Indians. Some feel there's a sizable Saponi component to the Lumbee. There are also many descendants throughout the country and Canada. Some of us on this forum belong to the Southside Virginia Native American Descendants ASsociation (SVNADA) which is largely comprised of eastern Siouan descendants (Saponi is synomymous with Eastern Siouan).
None of the above groups existed officially more than a generation ago, nearly all the families involved were listed officially by the government as either white, black or mullato for many generations, however obvious the Indian ancestry was.

The onlu evidence I have in reguards to my
ancestrial ties to native americans in particular the Saponi and Chickahominy people comes from other peoples research and a phisical description of my ancestors done in the early 1800's.

If you'd care to share what lines you have that can be tied to the Saponi and Chickahominy we'd appreciate it. It might help some others with their lines.

Ok here go's
My Gr,Gr,Gr Grandfather was named Amos Collins. He was born in Virginia 1791 and moved foirst to North CArolina and Married I believe a Saponi or Chickahomany Woman named Muriel or something like that. The Handwriting is hard to read.
Anyway Amos Collins and Muriel had several Children including
John Gilbert Collins who married a chickahomany or Saponi woman named Susanah Napier.
Story is that she took the name of the family she was traveling with.
I am told from several sources that of the two women one was Saponi and the other was Chickahomany. No one at this point seems to know which was which.
One of Amos children named Calvin Collins is described as either black or indian. They all ended up in Clay County Kentucky.
Now you know all I know.
Not much but it is all I have
Thanks

Warlord:
Did you recieve the info I emailed you privately and was there anything in it that you could use?
In Floyd Co. Kentucky between 1800 -1830 there was a tribe/clan of some 45 family of Collins living in a settlement. As Floyd Co. was divided some of these Collins found themselves living in a different county.
Example: My Meredith Collins is listed on Floyd co. tax list 1810 as Mullato; 1820 Meredith and his eldest son, Bradley are still listed in Floyd Co. but listed as Free persons of color. About 1821 Floyd started to divide and Meredith is listed in Pike Co. 1830 & 40. Meredith was granted land on Shelby Creek & John's Creek and never moved from the time he arrived in Kentucky in 1809 until his death in 1841.
For those searching for Collins in SE Kentucky you might want to spread out and search the other counties. (Harlan, Bell, Knox, Perry, Letcher, Johnson, Leslie, Clay, Pike and Martin)
