have just really started in trying to trace my family tree--my aunt and i went to halifax county record department to hit a dead end from the beginning. we were unabe to locate any documentation of my grandmother, Fannie Turner Jones. Her mother was Emma Poythress and her father, Nathaniel Weldon Turner. With both of these last names, Turner and Poythress, bring me back to the portugese nationality that seems to include saponi, nottaway indians. I keep running across the Christianna fort in trying to research. A cousin of my grandmothers remembers the bethany school in gaston in northampton county NC, however did not attend it. The surnames Poythress,Bass,Newsome,Turner,Scott are the most popular and through talking with relatives they remember my grandmother to be cousins with the bass and scotts. My grandmother Fannie Turner Jones married my grandfather Samuel Thomas Jones March 18 around 1936. His mother was a Clary from Brunswick co. VA. He had very distinct facial features, the hawk style nose, high cheek bones, and dark olive complexion just as my father inherited. A lot of people that come across him beleive him to be mixed (B&W), or indian. His birth certificate in Halifax county had his race listed as colorec then marked through to white as they checked sibling race and his ister was marked as white, so his birh certificate was then changed and notated wit this information. Any help on this research would be greatly appreciated and any tips welcome--Thanks to everyone in advance Jeanna

Welcome to the forum, Jeanna,
I'll see if I can help but I need more information on Samuel Jones to find him.
What is Samuel Jones's date of birth on his birth certificate?
Were Fannie Turner and Samuel Jones married in Halifax Co NC?
Do you know the names of Samuel Jones's siblings?
According to the 1920 Halifax Co., NC census of Weldon Twp, (p.10A), Nathaniel and Emma D. Turner lived in the house of Maritius (?) Turner, b.abt.1857 NC and Maritius/Martins's wife Virginia _?_, b.abt.1861 NC, probably Nathaniel's parents. Nat was 24, b.in NC and Emma D., "wife", was 17, b.NC. All were shown as "MU".
(Maritius? Turner's first name is indexed as "Martins" but that's not the name shown on the census which is barely ledgible so didn't find them using those names in 1910. Still looking and will let you know what I find.
The 1930 Halifax Co NC, Weldon Twp census shows Nat Turner as 35 y/o, marr'd at 20 y/o; and Emma, "wife", 25 y/o, marr'd at 16 and they have two dau's; FANNIE, 9, and Margie, 5, all shown as "White".
In both 1920 & 1930, there are "PORTIS" relatives living with the Turners.

Welcome, Jeanna, do you know Crystal Rose? She is most certainly a cousin of yours. She's posted a lot on here, but not lately. You might want to use the search feature (upper right hand corner ) and search on the name Crystal. I hope I can call her before this weekend. There's a pow wow at Occoneechee STate Park in Clarksville, VA, I'm hoping to see her at.

Bill--you have helped out so much already--My Grandmother was Fannie and her sister,Margie. We were unable to locate proof of Fannies existance anywhere..we were beginning to beleive she was born in another county. The ages match up perfectly--she was born May 8,1921. As far as Samuel Jones, I beleive he may have been born in Brunswick co. His birthday is December 24, i'm not sure of which year, but i know he was older than Fannie, so he was born before 1921. I can get thia info from my aunt. I am interested in the Jones side of my family but at this point i'm really more interested in the Turner side. You mentioned relatives with the last name of Portis--I have never heard this name in referesence to being related but find it interesting--something to definately check into

Bill---in previous posting, you mentioned there were family members with the last name Portis. Now after thinking about this for a little while--just realized great granmothers maiden name was Poythress..Emma Poythress Turner--think this may be the same just misspelled???

That name is spelled a variety of ways, including Poythress, Portris, Portras, Poythris, etc. in the old Northampton records

Jeanna & Forest Hazel,
Yes, I was considering the same scenario and per Forest Hazel it was spelled several different ways in at least one other county so it's possible. I'm checking it out and will let you know.

Why don't you come to the Occoneechee State Park pow wow this weekend, Jeanna? My family will be there. My family will be singing some as "Red Earth Family Drum." It's hard to miss. It's the drum with a lot of young boys in it.
It's across the bridge from Clarksville, on Hwy 58. Starts at noon.

Jeanne,
The Emma that was listed in the census was not a Poythress but a Turner by birth as well. She was the daughter of Lundy Jack and Annie Turner. You may want to check Wilson County records as well. That part of the family left Gaston for a short time and went to Black Creek and Stauntonsburg.
We are definitely cousins and welcome to the Saponitown Forum. We have alot of loose ends to finish tying up but otherwise, research is going very well. Please contact me and we'll start tying in your line with the settlement. :)
Again, welcome and look forward to hearing from you.

after speaking with my aunt tonight--I confirmed what you stated- Emma was a Turner before marrying a Turner. Found out Emma's father Lundy Turner died at the age of 70 and is buried in Black Creek Cemetary in Kenly. Nat's parents were Weldon Nat Turner and Jenny Jarrell. I beleive I saw Matthews birth certificate in Halifax Co. and his race listed as portuguese. Do you have anything to confirm or disprove this. As far as my grandfather (Sam) his parents were Ella Clary and Benjamin Jones of Brunswick. Also, my husband's paternal grandmother was Mary Magdaline Turner of Greensville Co. trying to find out if these two sets of Turners are related or are they the same. Mary was married to Cola Dunlow from Greensville co, also-----Crystal, how do you tie into the Turners??

Jeanne,
We're going to have to start working on this to figure out exactly how you fit.
My lineage is:
Allen Turner/Eliza June Scott
(Daughter) Amanda Turner/Lovel Poythress
(Son) Horace Poythress/Laura Turner (d. of Allen Jr. and Etterid Turner) Allen Jr is the brother of above Amanda.
(Daughter) Mamie Poythress/Anthony Peters{on}
(Daughter) Ola Peters{on}/Charles Walker (My grandparents)
I tie into the Turners every which way I turn. This is what I have on the Turner line you spoke of,
Lundy Jack had Emma D., Mattie, Marshall (which we called Cat),
Rufus and Peter. Cat married my grgrandmother's sister Laura Poythress. My mother knew them very well.
Lundy's parents were William David and Adelaid Poythress Turner.
They were married in Northampton County 2-2-1875.
Their children were:
Sid G. Turner born 5-9-1876
Jarrett Turner born abt 1877
Eunice Bell Turner born born 2-29-1884 (married Robert Poythress son of Richard and Ada Turner Poythress)
Charlie Turner born ? married Gracie Turner, 2nd Phelia Poythress (daughter of James and Mary Peters Poythress)
Julianna Turner born ? married George Turner (They had a son names George Jr. They lived in Saratoga, Wilson County. My mother used to go to the prayer meetings at their house).
Lundy Jack Turner born ? married Annie.
Adelaid Poythress is the daughter of Sterling and Elizabeth Turner Poythress. Elizabeth is the daughter of Allen Turner and Eliza June Scott. Sterling is the son of James and Sarah Crowder Poythress.
I have more info on this line and their branches if you would like.
Just let me know. :) Once this group made their way down to Wilson, they were able to pass as white and so documented. In Northampton and Halifax, they were FPC, Mulatto, Colored, Black and then Portuguese. I have the legislative papers regarding the race change to Portuguese. I'm in touch with a few cousins in the settlement and we're hoping to have a large family reunion sometime around August.
You will find we didn't marry to far away from each other. So, we're our own grandma. LOL
Family for the most part are still refusing to talk. Too many hard memories for them.
Regarding the Brunswick/Greensville County VA connections. That's what I am working on now. We have a group of Turners that are in Greensville but the time frame I am working is mid 1700's. The settlement was on the border. Half in VA, half in NC. The Turners in VA were known as the Gypsy Turners.

Jeanna & Crystal,
Lundy Turner was born abt. 1875, per 1900 Northhampton Co NC census, ED67 Gaston Twp, p.16A.
Lundy Turner, Farmer, Jun 1875, 25, m'd 5 yrs; NC, NC, NC.
Annie; wife; b.June 1877, m'd 5 yrs; NC, NC, NC.
Rufus L., son, b.Feb 1897, 3, NC.
Marshall, son, b.Mar 1898, 2, NC.
In 1910 Northhampton Co, Lundy's family is:
Lundy, farmer, 34, m'd 15 yrs, b.NC
Annie, wife, 30, m'd 15 yrs, had 6 children, 4 living; b.NC.
Rufus, son, 12, NC.
EMMA D., dau, 7, NC****
Marshall, son, 3, NC.
Lucy (?), dau, 11 (?) months, NC
Speculation: The Marshall b.1898 may have died and a son b. 1907 was also then named Marshall.

I figured something out today also with the help of my mother's memory. Thank GOD she has one like an elephant.
Lundy Jack was called L.T. as a nickname. Miss Annie was his wife. We've established that. BUT, Miss Annie is a Turner by birth as well. She is the sister of Lillie Turner that married our infamous Couch Scott that appears on the 1910 census and on Forrest's hogbuster page. We have found a gent in Wilson that can identify almost everyone in the Scott family picture. He knew Mrs Scott (Grandma Lillie). Miss Annie gave my mother her first taste of Onion Soup and taught her how to make it when she was very young. They lived just outside of Kenly, Wilson County by 1940.
Bill,
Can you see if you can find the parents listed on some earlier census for the following children:
Annie Turner
Elizabeth Turner
"Bud" Turner
James Turner
Lillie Turner
Lucy Turner
These are all siblings and I know who most married but we can't find the parents. I believe it will be a James J. and Mary Turner but I don't know you they are. Thanks.

Crystal,
James J., wife Mary, children named James W. and Lucy found in the same Northhampton Co family and I only found one James Turner there.
"Zeteriah" Turner, the Aunt of James W. Turner, son of James J. & Mary, would probably be the sister-in-law of James J. Turner, your proposed father of Lillie and Annie.
1910 Northhampton Co NC census, ED75 Gaston Twp, 16 May, p.10B:
at 120, 121
TURNER, Zeteriah; Own Income; f, PT, 60, W'd, NC, NC, NC.
POYTHRESS, Bessie; G.Dau; f, PT, 5, NC, NC, NC.
TURNER, James W.; Nephew, m, PT, 23, NC, NC, NC, Farmer.

(ditto), Charlie W.; son, m, PT, 19, NC.
(ditto), Jessie J.; son, m, PT, 17, NC.
(Mary had 10 children and 9 were still living - only 5 are accounted for on the 1900 census.)
p.10A, at 112, 113:
SCOTT, Couch; farmer, m, PT, 35, m-1, 16 yrs, NC, NC, NC.
(ditto), Lillie H.(?); wife, f, PT, 28, m-1, 16 yrs, NC, NC, NC.

(ditto), Sim (?); son, 4, NC.
(ditto), Addam; son, 2, NC.
(ditto), Eva; dau, 1 + 6 months, NC.
(Lundy & Annie Turner are 2 doors away at 110, 111.)
Lillie, b.abt1882, born after the 1880 census and married before the 1900 census, can't be connected except by inference.
1900 (same census Co.), ED67 Gaston East Pct, p.17A
(Lundy and Annie Turner are at 278, 287, neither of whom were found in 1880 NC or Va - but I'll look again.)
at 304, 313
TURNER, James; farmer; Apr 1851, 49, m-27 yrs, NC, NC, NC.
(ditto), Mary; wife; Jan 1853, 47, m-27, NC, NC, NC.

at 306, 315:
BASS, Norman; farmer; Apr 1864, 36, m-18, NC, NC, NC.
(ditto), Bettie; wife; Aug 1865, 34, m-18, 6/6, NC, NC, NC.
(6 children listed)
at 307, 316:
TURNER, Esrion (Erron?); farmer; Jul 1874, 25, m-5, NC, NC, NC.
(ditto), Hellen; wife; Jan 1876, 24, m-5, NC, NC, NC.
(ditto), Burnice; dau; Apr 1899, 1, NC.
(ditto), Infant; dau; Mar 1900, 2/12, NC.
(added on 1910 census:
Harvey, son, 9, NC.
-illedgible-, dau, 7, NC.
-illedgible-, son, 3, NC.
Carrie, dau, 1, NC.
at 308, 317:
TURNER, Eliga ("Elijah"); farmer, Mar 1876, 24, m-0, NC,NC,NC.
(ditto), Dollie (Sallie?); wife, Feb 1880, 20, m-0, NC,NC,NC.
(added on 1910 census:
Blanch, dau, 10, NC.
Clarence, son, 8, NC.
Plumniss, dau, 6, NC.
Marvin, son, 2, NC.
I didn't find any of these people except in these 2 census years, including up in 1880 Greensville Co., Va.- Hope you can think of where they may have come from.
I paged thru the 1900 Northhampton Co, Gaston East Pct, census and didn't find "Zeteriah" there. Looked around for her "all states", hoping she would be nearby James and Mary Turner but couldn't find her under any spelling I could think of, nor by listing all Turners in 1900 N.Carolina - I hate it when they hide like this ! :)
James & Mary Turner weren't found in 1880 NC or Va either.
Got any ideas?

Zeteriah is our infamous Etteriah. She is the wife of Albert J. Turner. Her parents were Benjamin and Nelly Turner. Benjamin's mother is the elusive Winnifred Turner. Albert is the son of Allen Turner and Eliza June Scott.
Etteriah is the mother of Laura Turner that married Horace Poythress. Grandma Laura passed away by 1910 and Bessie went to live with her grandmother. She married Mathew Hales.
Thank you for that but I don't know where else to look other than maybe Warren? I dunno.

Jeanna,
Samuel Jones's Parents:
1930 Brunswick Co., Va census, ED8 Red Oak Mag.Dist.
10 April; p.8A (stamped as p.165A), at 137, 139:
JONES, Soloman; farmer, 47, m'd @ 20, Va, Va, Va.
" , Jessie S.; wife, 38, m'd @ 16. Va, Va, Va.
" , SAMUEL; son, 19, Va.****
" , Rebecca M.; dau, 16, Va.
" , William E.; son, 14, Va.
" , George M.; son, 12, Va.
" , Fredrick; son, 10, Va.
" , Norman T.; son, 8, Va. (twin)
" , Thomas T.; son, 8, Va. (twin)
" , Soloman Jr.; son, 6, Va.
" , Kathaleen; dau, 1 + 7 months.
" , Nannie L.; Niece, 15, Va (dau of Soloman's brother Edwin)
" , ELLA; Mother, 80, widowed, Va.
While all these were listed as "B", Soloman's sister Lucy and her children were listed "MU".
Soloman/Kiah's siblings listed as Ella's children in 1900:
Edwin, son, b.May 1884.
Mattie, dau, b.Mar 1887.
Irena, dau, b.Apr 1891.
William, son, b.Jan 1892 (?)
Florence G., dau, b.Apr 1892 (?)
Lucy, dau, b.Feb 1893.
Susan M., dau, Feb 1894 ("Sulla")
Ella B.; dau, b.May 1895. (twin)
Emmet D.; son, b.May 1895.
On the 1900 and 1920 census, Soloman is listed as "Kiah".
On 1900 census, Kiah was b.Feb 1880.
On 1900 census, Ella Jones, b.May 1850, is already widowed.
The only Ella Jones of the right age on the 1880 census is the wife of Soloman Jones, b.abt.1815 Va., but Kiah/Soloman, b.1880 is not listed with them so I'm unable to say with absolute certainty that these are Kiah's parents. (Sturgeon Dist., p.232B, at 58, 58.)
This Ella on the 1870 census, was 19 yrs old, m'd to Soloman, 45, (b.abt.1825 - but these are the same Soloman & Ella) and have Jones children Isabella, 10, & Harry, 6, living with them who may be Ella's siblings (?) or Soloman's children by a previous wife and there is an Elizabeth Walker, 2, and William Walker, 4, also living with them in Totaro District, Brunswick Co., p.123A, at 239, 266.
If you need anything else, let me know.

According to my father (Thomas "Tommy" Jones) my grandfather , Samuel Thomas Jones' parents were Benjamin Jones and Ella Clary Jones from Gasburg VA-Brunswick co. Sam's brothers were Willie J., Emmett, Albert, and sisters were Cody (female) and Minnie. Jeanna,
As you know, Gasburg is a small town near the NC border. Census records are annotated by Precincts and/or Townships. None of the census records break-out Gasburg specifically, it is included in a larger precinct or township. I don't know what precinct/township it would have been in.
Ages shown on census records can be "off" by as much as 2yrs and sometimes even more.
Census index lists may not be complete but having checked census index lists for every county within 50 miles of Gasburg, both in Va and NC, there is no Benjamin Jones with a wife Ella and no Benjamin with children named Willie, Emmett, Albert, Cody or Minnie.
The only family having an Ella, William, Emmett AND a Samuel, is the one I listed for Red Oak Twp in Brunswick Co., Va. Cody and Minnie could have been nicknames. This Samuel is the only one in the area who might have been born around 1909, plus or minus 2 yrs. (There is no Thomas within any reasonable margin of age error, either.)
In this case, Ella Jones is the grandmother, not mother of Samuel but this Samuel does have brothers named William and Emmett.
If this is not them, then they have been left off of several consecutive censuses.
With all due respect, you might have to do some digging in the Brunswick county courthouse to verify some of the info you have.

Linda, wonder if Clary could be acossiated with Clardy?
WILLIAM COLLINS, born 1770, died 1837, married 1791 MARY CLARDY, daughter of JOHN CLARDY and ELIZABETH BULLINGTON. William and Mary moved across the State line from Mecklenburg County, Virginia, to Granville County, North Carolina, about the time he married. It is believed and assumed by early family members ca. 1920's that he was the son of William Collins of Spotsylvania County who came to Halifax sometime in the early history of that county. William had five brothers and sisters: (from Richard A. Edwards)

MY FATHER SAID THAT HIS GRANDFATHER CHANGED HIS NAME FROM CLAY TO CLARY, AND THEY WERE IN WARREN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA (JUST ACROSS BORDER BETWEEN VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA), THIS COULD GIVE A LOT MORE INFORMATION. I HAVE NOT BEEN THERE YET. DOES ANYONE HAVE INFORMATION IN WARREN COUNTY. I KNOW BILL IS GREAT FOR THIS. (HI BILL-IT'S OLE "WHAT'S HER NAME"):D
MY DAD'S FAMILY HAS NAMES SUCH AS: VALENTINE, CLARY(CLAY), AND CYPRESS. HE SAID THAT BEFORE THEY LIVED IN NORTH CAROLINA, THAT THEY HAD MOVED FROM NEW YORK STATE (UP BY THE MOHAWK INDIANS). I DON'T KNOW WHAT TOWN.
MY GREAT GRANDFATHER'S NAME WAS "ANTILLICUS VALENTINE", HOWEVER PEOPLE CALLED HIM "BROCK". HE WAS MARRIED TO "MAHAILIA" AND MY OTHER GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS NAMED "PETER JAMES CLARY (CLAY) HE SAID THAT HE WAS BLACKFOOT AND HE WAS MARRIED TO "PANTHEA CYPRESS". MY GREAT GRANDFATHERS KNEW WHAT NATIVE PLANTS TO USE AND I BELIEVE SPOKE SOME INDIAN TOO. I'LL CONFIRM WITH MY DAD AGAIN ABOUT LANGUAGE. I DO KNOW THAT HE SAID THAT THEY COULD NOT READ OR WRITE ANYTHING. THAT'S SO VERY SAD! I DO REMEMBER BROCK VALENTINE, HE WAS SHORT, DARK SKIN , HE DIED WHEN I WAS SMALL SO FORGIVE MY SHORT DESCRIPTION, I'LL CHECK WITH MY DAD. PERHAPS A LINK IS SOMEWHERE IN OUR FORUM. I'LL BE CHECKING BACK IN-BETWEEN SCHOOL WORK.

Valentine is such a typical name for Mecklenburg and Brunswick counties. Wouldn't it be interesting to trace your Clary/Clays and Valentines to NY and then back down here again? I wonder what we'll find if we snoop around those census records from the early 1800's in Cayuga and Oneida? or what it Onandaga? counties, with all the names that are such a glaring transplant of the set of names going on down here. (This set of names just "happens" to appear in these New York counties within a generation of the Saponi "disappearing" from history in exactly the same location. The Tutelo went on to Six Nations in Canada, but "nobody knows" what became of the Saponi. Yeah right. Vance, what are the statistical probabilities that a set of several dozen names would randomly occur in two widely separated locations, particularly when there's historical references documenting that the first set of names moved to the location of the second?)
Bill Childs

The statistical probability would be pretty slim.

They have been married for 13 yrs ("m-13") and Martha has had 7 children with all 7 still living (those begining with Nellie and younger). The month and year listed for each are of course the month and year of birth.
In 1880, this Peter Clary is in Brunswick Co., Va, note that children correspond to the oldest children of the 1900 Warren Co., NC Peter Clary. I'll include the neighbor on each side of him.
1880 Brunswick Co., Va census; ED 30 Meherrin Twp; pg. 275A, 18 June: (all "B" listed, all b.Va as well as both parents of each).
