I am a reasonably experienced genealogist and have been researching my family for many years now. My grandmother was adopted and although we were certain she was native american by looks and color, we had no proof. Recently I came into possession of her adoption papers and have successfully traced her family... the dilemma is that I keep hearing "native American" and "Blackfoot" from her birth family. Here are the names:
Dawes/Daws, Williams, Flood, Robbins, Vick or Vic, Walston, and Outlaw. Have you all heard any of these names in your research? Am I looking in the wrong "tribe"?
Thank you
Melissa

Welcome, Melissa,
I have a couple of Williams. Had you said Williamson, I would have said that I have a lot of them. Other names I am not sure. Others will post and tell you if they have these names.
Welcome.

Is her family from around Robeson county? I'm pretty sure I've heard the name Outlaw among the Lumbee.
Rick Haithcock's list shows Williams as possibly Saponi or Creek, Flood as possibly Meherrin, Robbins possibly Chowan. His list is not to be taken as documentation or proof, but as leads he's gleaned in all his research, names he's seen in various contexts and what he's surmised about them. Have you read the article I have off the main page? www.saponitown.com/blackfoot.htm That's most of what I've found out and surmised about NC Blackfoot.

Hello,
I am Collins's on my Father's side ( Griffin Collins line) and Mullins's on my Mother's side ( Riley Mullins line) of NC, TN, KY and VA. Anyway, my Mother used to say when I was young and we would talk about our ancestry, that we were related to Outlaws! And she talked like it was a surname and not in reference of shady behavior. She would say something like............we are related to Crafts, Schoolcrafts, Hubbards, Moores and Outlaws. She has Alzheimer's and isn't capable of any questions now. However, I have never located any relatives with that surname. With a family oral history of both Blackfoot and Cherokee , your mention of a NA Outlaw surname is interesting to me.
Linda or Melissa, do you have anymore info about that last name?

Bushtick,
I am on the "PERRY" surname list and have been communicating with a lady who is from the Griffin Collins line. You might be interested in contacting her. It seems she also has a Perry line but it is not the same as mine. A Nathan Perry is listed as living next door to Griffin Collins Sr. in Grainger Co. TN.
Her name is Sheri Kelly and she can be reached at:

We have been emailing about my John W. Collins as it was Griffin Collins that signed the marriage bond for John W.Collins and Lydia Toner in 1821. My thoughts are that Griffin and Meredith were probably brothers. Meredith born 1760 and Griffin b. 1774.

Melissa,
Long time ago I ran across Dawes, Williams & Outlaw families (separate lines) with Ndn ancestors. (Some of the Outlaw's are indexed as "Outland" due to writing the ending "w" with a swirl on the end.)
That particular Outlaw line was in late 1700s W. Tenn. but was originally from early 1700s NC (Iredell-Yadkin-Stokes Co. area, if I recall correctly) and related to Reddiks of NC & Southern Va. They surmised they were Cherokee but it didn't pan out that way - I thought they were maybe E. Sioux but never found anything specific to any particular group. Your Blackfoot I.D. should provide an important clue.
At your earliest traced date/place, where were your people?

My earliest Outlaw is found abt 1770 near Tyan Cokey Swamp later in the Roanoke Island area, and died abt 1880 in Edgecombe Co.. Her name was Susannah Outlaw sometimes spelled outley, married an Ephraim Daws ( the name changed to dawes). This whole family is very dark skinned and fine featured in the pictures I have. The family mentioned Blackfoot, so I assume the darkness comes from native american and not african american. I am even considering native american and african american mix marrying into anglos as they are SO dark. It's just at the theory stage now :)

Who's the pretty lady from Scottsville, VA? I tried to find Scottsville on the atlas, but couldn't. Look close, she has an epicanthic folds over her eyes, found in Asian and Native American people. (An epicathic fold is when there's no crease above the eye.)
You could cast her to play Eric Schweig's sister. This side of your family looks like a lot of modern VA Indians. I'll post some more of your pics.

That was sent to me by a Dawes researcher. It is unknown who she is, but he says she is a dawes. I have no idea where that is either. Post all you want, maybe someone will see what I don't!

Very handsome family. They all look pretty familiar. #1 looks like my son's Chickahominy girlfriend, #4 reminds me of Cohee Lady (here on the forum), #5 reminds me of Crystal, the girl in #7 reminds me of Crystal's daughter.
Where in NC do you live?

I am in Missouri but the family was originally in NC. Thanks for the compliment! It has become kind of facinating to me, now that I have found the blood relatives, as to the generational resembolence and similarities. I was hoping there would be some trait that the famiy would have that would narrow down the places I should search. From the previous posts I am going to use those clues and start the search!
Thanks again!

Sorry Brenda,
I have been on vacation in NC for a week, but to answer your suggestion about Sheri. I have been in contact with Sheri for several years now and she has been a GREAT help with all of my research, not just limited to Collins. She is very organized and thorough with her information. As a matter of fact, while I was in NC, she was in Ft. Smith, AK for a family reunion ( Coffee I believe) and hoped to do a lot of research while there. She is a good person and we have become email friends along with being distance cousins.
Hope you are well.
And again thanks for the suggestion.

Find anything interesting on your vacation to NC or was it just for enjoyment?
I wish we could sort out the Meredith /Griffin Collins mess as if we did that it might lead us one step closer to solving who their parents were. I assume they had to be related to have one sign a marriage bond for another's son.

Thanks for the compliment Linda. :)
When I saw #4, the first person I thought of was my cousin Lee. Poythress/Peters line. We can definitely see the resemblence between the one picture and my daughter Cierra. In those 2 pictures you can definitely see some traits from the "Portugese" Settlement. Combination of traits from the Peters and Poythress.
What area of NC are we talking this line from?

Actually we have a vacation home in Warne, NC.......I say vacation but it really is a working vacation each trip there. We went to open it up after being close for the winter , and as always it is work, work and more work to get it back in shape. But I must say it is always nice to be in the mountains with its cool nights and GOD given beauty. But the week goes by too quickly and it 's back to FL and the heat and flatland.
However I do have plans to go to VA in June for the week of 14- 20th , there is a dedication and memorial schedule for Civil War soldiers in Wise, Wise Co., VA and my G Grandfather Washington Mullins will be one of them honored. Also , my sister and I plan to go over to Kingsport, Tn to attend one day of the Melungeon Gathering, our first time doing so.
Hopefully I will be able to do alot more research while on this visit.
The Wise Co. Historical Society has a wonderful research facility and they are having family research days during that week also. With researchers there to help us and assess to records. I have made 2 trips in the last 3-4 years there to research at the Wise Co. Court house and over to the Whitesburg, KY library ( both are GREAT places with lots of info and records). And I have learned alot each visit, so hopefully this will be a productive trip too.
Yes, it would be great to solve the Meredith and Griffin connection once and for all and as you say it would clear up some loose ends. I'll be on the look out for any info I can find.
