Rosemary,

Welcome to the forum. The Holloway surname is a hard one to crack. My Meredith Collins met up with a Mary HOLLOWAY about 1795. They were in Wilkes Co. NC in 1797 but I don't know where Mary came from or who her parents were. They then moved on to Russell Co. Va. where they lived until 1809. I have been at this for over 30 years and still have nothing on my ggggrandmother.
Mary fades out of the picture by 1812 and Meredith takes a new common law wife by 1815. (well I think before that because she had Meredith's last son in 1815)

Another oddity is that one of Meredith and Mary"Polly"'s son, James Collins married Susan Holloway. I always wondered if Susan was anyhow related to Mary. Court records show that Susan was placed into the guardianship of James being that she was less than 14 years of age.

I have heard that the Holloway name was mixed native american but have never proven it. It is a name that has not shown up on the forum since I have been here. As for Meredith Collins he was listed on 1810 records as MULLATO and 1820 as FREE PERSON of COLOR. His first wfe is unknown but the son of that union was also listed in the same way. The third common law wife ,Millie Johnson was suppose to be full blood Cherokee. In my opinion people of mixed heritages tended to stick close together, migerate, and interrmarry.

Hi Rosemary,
Do you have names of people related to your Holloways and any specifics? Seen this name spelled several different ways in different parts of the country for even the same person. Bill.

The only name I have is Guella Holloway.(Gila) One site said her name was Hollowell. I just saw that recently. I was told Holloway and that is what I found when she Married in Guilford Co.N.C.

Okay.... that must be the Guella Holloway marriage bond of 20 Feb 1849 Guilford Co., NC ? to McNeal Brown. Bondsman: John Roach (can't isolate him from other John Roachs). Witness: R.N. McCulloch (who could be the court clerk).
Found a Civil War Pension Record for him as veteran of Company G, 147th Indiana Infantry Regiment; he enlisted 1 Mar 1865; mustered out of service 4 Aug 1865. "Widow's Application" of "Gillie A. Holloway" for the pension is dated 15 Aug 1895.

Let's take the "easy" one first :)
This is a 'round about so follow this along:

In 1860 Hamilton Co., Ind, Washington Twp, there were a community of people from NC. One of those was William Brown, 27 (b. abt. 1830-33), b. in NC. (BENNET, ROSS, WHITE & CARTER families figure into this also - they're always next door in both states - just not sure yet how they connect.)
Living with him were what appears to be his sister and brother:
Elizabeth, 24, and Isaac, 20, all born NC.

In 1850 Guilford Co., NC
The only "Holoway"/Holloway found in 1850 Guilford Co., NC census indexes, is Armisted Holoway, 65 (b.abt. 1785 Va.) and his wife (probably) "F.", 57 (b.abt.1793 "Guilford Co., NC"; with a "Mary An" Holoway, 17, and a "Z. White", 5, female, living with them. The Head of household was Elvira White, 28, f, $300, (b.) Guilford Co., NC.
Four houses after Armisted Holoway on the 1850 Guilford Co., NC census, is the same William, Elizabeth & Isaac Brown who turn up in Hamilton Co., Ind in 1860. Living with them in 1850 is Lydia MUREDITH, 50, f, (b.) "Guilford Co., NC".

Also in 1860 Hamilton Co., Ind., is Daniel Brown, 64, b.NC., in Fall Creek Twp. His wife is Jane 53, b.NC; William, 21, b.Ind; Rebeca, 17, b.Ind; Mary A., 14, b.Ind; Winney, 10, b.NC. They may provide a clue, but they've been there for almost 20 years before McNeal & Guella moved to Indiana in 1849 (see kids place of birth).

Armisted "Holoway" is the only Holloway (of any spelling variation I can think of) who is in 1850 Guilford Co., NC.

Armisted Holloway married "Famey" (Fanny?) Carrol on 29 Oct 1817 in Guilford Co., NC.
In the same time period in Guilford County:
Taylor Holloway married Susannah Murry on 8 June 1820.

A generation of marriages earlier, when Guilford was a part of Orange Co., NC:
Thomas Holloway + Johanna CAINE, 5 Oct 1782.
Rachel Holloway + Benjamin STEPHENS, 9 June 1784.
Ruthey Holloway + William RAY, 23 Nov 1784.
Jane Holloway + Henry STEVENS, 9 Aug 1787.
Lettis Holloway + William SMITH, 25 Nov 1788.
These could be relatives of Armisted Holloway. I would have felt better about all this if a Holloway or Brown association to MEREDITH, CARTER, WHITE, ROSS, etc., had been found.
If you go looking for Thomas Holloway, look also for a "John Thomas" Holloway.

There are a lot of Browns in 1850 Guilford Co., and all in the Northern Division where Armisted "Holoway" was found. McNeal is an obvious surname so I'm looking for a McNeal family who has Brown relatives in Guilford Co. I'll post you if I turn anything up that has any merit.
Add "Gilly Ann" to your list of Guella Holloway's list of a.k.a.'s as per the 1870 Hamilton Co Ind census.

The " (b.) " is "born".
