Hello all, I am Nancy and have family names of Gay, Williams, Abner, Bolling, (Bowling) Abner, Parker. I was told all my life that
we were of Native American Blood. Blackfoot, Cherokee, and now I have proven my heritage to Chief Powwhatan through my Gay family. My Grandmother was Nannie Gay. The Blackfoot and Cherokee as I was told came from my Grandfather Parker's side of the family he was the husband of Nannie Gay. his mother was part Cherokee , now I am wondering from the information I have been reading if the Blackfoot actually came through the Powwhatan connection. does anyone have a clue? Thank you
Linda

Thanks for posting, Nancy, and glad you got the forum working for you.
Nancy didn't mention, her people are from Clay County, KY, which is one of the densest areas for people with the Blackfoot ID. I was excited to see her surnames. Bowling is on the "short list" of known Saponi/Tutelo names. I think Guy is too, if Gay is a variant of that. and Parker and Williams are on the "suspected to be" list of names that some believe to be found among Saponi families.
Pretty incredible. I was hoping some of the other researchers on this forum could take a look at this.
Are there any particulars about these lines you could share? It might be good to do that in the "Share Genealogy Section" so we don't lose track of it.

Well, I was gonna ask if your Parkers were in Arkansas, but I see they were in Ky.
I keep seeing the Parker surname and they married into my family, and I think they were in E. Ky before Ar, as other surnames pop up in both places.
I have run into strange things while researching E Ky. It "seems" as if Chickamauga Cherokee were there, but the records don't seem to be documented except in family stories, and people saying their ancestors were Cherokee. When I look for historic documents they are blank, except for when Dragging Canoe, Benge, Watts, Doubleheaad and others attacted settlers and at times the "friendly Indians" who helped the settlers. There seem to be a great many people sayiing their ancestors were BOTH Cherokee and "Eastern Blackfoot". This is too common to be a coincidence.
Earlier, in the 1750s. some Cherokee who attacked the French and their Northern Indian allies were called "friendly Indians". in this same geographic area stretching from the western parts of Virginia to SW Pa or parts of what's now Ohio aprox.
In Little Turtle's War the Chickamauga Cherokee were recorded in In and Oh and were the Ohio Valley Cherokee. Everything I read about then said they either migrated to Arkansas or anywhere along the Tennessee River in N Al later-- in the 1790s.
But family stories have them popping up still in Ky. There is the massacre at Yahoo Falls, a documented historic event, in 1811. This is the same location the "Blackfoot tag" is popping up and they often have the same surnames. I am wondering if these "Kentucky Cherokee" are really "Eastern Blackfoot".
There are Troxell and Brock websites that have many surnames that married into my family but they married into my family in Arkansas. Parker, Darter, Rainwater, and Brock and others are some of those surnames what you will see in Ar and E Ky both. My direct surnames are Dickson, Wayland, Richey, Hamilton, Gist, Woods, Howard (I think) and those just mentioned.
But Parkers married my Richey's, just as did those other surnames, but they did so in Arkansas, and they did so more than once.

My Great Grandfather William 'Bill' Parker moved to Arkansas after he married Louisa McCollum and then moved on the Oklahoma. They are both buried there. In Kay County (not positive on this name) Oklahoma. I have the name of the cemetery in my files. If this sounds familiar at all. William was born in Clay County, Kentucky. My Grandfather William Parker was born in Owsley County. Ky. and died there. He married Nannie Gay. I believe the Guy may be an error in spelling because it comes directly from Ireland. I am relate to the Bollings and Bowlings. descend from John Rolfe and Pocahontas 12th generation. Our people moved all over. Thank you for your interest. Nancy

I guess whatever you know about names/dates/places, etc.
So you're positive the Gay name came from Ireland? When/where would that have been?
