Hey all -
I went to Va. Dept. of Historical Resources today to find out about getting documents, photos and site material related to our interests. We are a go on photos for the study collection - these include great sioun preserved bone work, shell, pottery, lithics, metal and glass trade etc. i'll have good access to site surveys and locations for matching up settlement interests from historical period. also right at contact and trade contact locations within the state. their library is open for research on interpretive data and other documents relating to va. prehistory and surrounding comparative data (NC for example). i can get either jpeg images of certain artifacts, a cd with multiples or slide duplication from their database. email me direct with special questions or specifics on $ for duplicates or specific sites / artifacts.
the garters discussed on previous post -
heres what i learned today!
garter or sash - european made, for trade. Chevron designs woven in a copper wrapped cotton cordage (hence preservation). on display at dhr, slides and drawings available when i visit next on that one. also site recovery is from farther west than i expected, Greenville Co. VA. - not Ft. Christianna but contemporary, close by, and related culturally (maybe even directly). the site was after contact of course, but a previous late woodland site sits within the boundaries of the contact site. I can gather more data if warranted beside visuals. Department open and friendly - i have worked with them before. they are switching some databases, so time may be a factor, as is tight window between my work and their hours.
