There's a town in North Carolina called Saxapahaw, named after the Sissipaha
Indians, who are allegedly extinct. I believe the word Sissipaha is a corruption of the Eastern Siouan words " ici asepa" which means " foot black." It's a thinly populated area now, but B.C. (before Caucasians) it was jumping -- the largest fertile plain in the region, to this day thick with archeological sites. There are lots of families with roots to this area claiming Blackfoot descent. Maybe not so extinct, eh? That is pretty much an oxymoron -- an extinct ancestor.

I passed through Saxapahaw yesterday. The Haw river looked horrible. With the drought, the muddy river bottom is all exposed. But the name of the bridge was interesting. Collins bridge. That's a core Eastern Siouan name. We'll have to look into that -- maybe discover a few more " extinct" descendants running around.

Linda,
What county are you talking about? Couldn't find it on my map.

Yes, Rosebud, you are just the person I was thinking of extroverted enough to go poking around and asking questions of the good folks in Saxapahaw about their family trees.

OHP....<giggle> here I come.

There's quite a few of these settlements I want and need to check out. Met a gentleman at work the other day who is an Artis/Blizzard/Turner descendant in Surry County. Supposed to meet with his mother to get some Oral History. Should turn out to be very interesting.
