I talked to our DKNicely last night and he told me something that's really pretty astonishing. He has a good ear for music and language, which apparently has been a trait for some time now in the family. His uncle passed down to him the name of their tribe CORRECTLY PRONOUNCED. It sounds something like "Tuckayo" with the ck being more of a gutteral sound, like when you clear your throat. DK, is the emphasis on the second syllable?
The word 'Tutelo" would be an equidistant corruption of this as the word 'Tuckahoe." Given a few other details, like his family originating from the historically recorded seat of the Tutelo near presently day Charlottesville, VA, I think we may have explained what this Tuckahoe ID is about.

Linda--Very good connections! *loud clapping can be heard* I think we should reward ourselves and each other when we figure this stuff out, so much a part of recovering our lost culture/heritage.

Linda,
I have found that the word Tuckahoe's has been spelled, Tuccahoe & Ptuckeoos. Also the word Cohees has been spelled Quohees.
Sincerely,
Coheelady

It was so cool to hear him say that word. Like a time warp had just rescued some precious tidbit we thought lost in the past.

Funny you should mention the ear for music. My family is very musically inclined. My nephew started playing the piano at the age of 3. He just went to New Mexico for a competition and won a $1000 scholarship for his music. He can't read a word of it. He plays strictly by ear and what he hears in his head. I never thought about the musical gift as being something from our Native Ancestry. Who knew?

Oops. I thought the K was for a middle name. Sorry.
There is something you could do that would be cool. Assuming you're on Windows, if you go to start > programs > accessories > entertainment > sound recorder you can record a small .wav file. (Also assuming you have a mic hooked to your system). If you recorded your ancestral pronunciation of that word and sent it as an attachment to me, or published it yourself to a site of your own, we could publish the link right here and everybody could hear it.

Dennis,
I have had similar experiences. One of my family's favorite past-times is to ride through Yorktown, VA with a video camera and Native Drum playing. The deer will literally come up right to the car doors while we video them. I have one video where I walk right up to a doe and lightly touch her back before she moves.
Butterflies, that is another one. It's nothing for 5-10 butterflies land on me in a day's time. And my son. He had one land on him and stayed with him to the grocery store, while shopping and then the trip home.
Eagles, at Fort Christanna, everytime we leave, we are escorted by at least 3 eagles. Never fails.

I could sit and listen to your stories forever. You are so correct in saying that we've lost so much in the advancement of civilization and commerce. People just refuse to stop long enough to reflect and insist building on every ant hill and snake hole possible. It is no wonder that everything is off balance. Not only in nature but in ourselves. There is and always has to be a communal understanding between us and nature. Mind, body and spirit. The one thing that gives me peace is the prophecy of 7 generations, we will gather again. I see this taking place before my very eyes. Nothing excites me more than to see all of our Nations coming home. Not only to each other but to the ways and traditions that we've tried to hold onto for so many years. And learning more as we go. It is my prayer that everyone will take 15 minutes today to stop and listen. Everything we need to know is on the wind. I have told Linda and Barry both, in due time. When we are ready, the ancestors will give us what we need and what we seek. It may come in the form of dreams or a foretelling owl, but we have to listen.

Just jokin'.
Ya know we have that Tuckehoe trdition in the Richey surname (including the Wayland, Wood(s), Dick(x)son surnames) of ours so that is interesting. I am still a novice at Virginia Tribes. Before thi search I honestly had never heard of several. Now I'm gonna run off and look up Tutelo. It's always a blessing to learn something. Thanks.

a brief interjection back on the pronunciation part - i was in PA a week or so ago and had made a meeting with a cayuga friend i do business with.
we got to talking and got on the "tutelo" biz. his gmother was a "too - deh - lee" as he pronounced it. anyway he was pretty excited to chat with fred and myself (for those who know us) and we talked about getting some more tapes on the songs from up there that are tutelo saponi in origin.

Three Eagles,
Groups of Methodists are called "Conferences", we're a pretty well organized bunch. To form a separate "Conference" you have to prove different ties either geographically or through language.
Rev. Tom Roughface (Ponca)was instrumental in getting the "Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference" (OIMC) goin', so the OIMC are a separate entity from the Oklahoma Conference of the UM Church. But Tom just died in a car wreck a couple of months back, tho, so please pray things go smoothly as we're in a transition. I'm gettin a little more involved with the OIMC.
We attend Hunting Horse United Methodist Church over in Lawton sometimes, & it has a mostly Kiowa/Comanche congregation -- so yeah, we do know a few folks but not a lot, & not the ones you asked about, tho, sorry. They do sing hymns in the Kiowa language & we do enjoy that.
There was a famous Cherokee Red Bird Smith, a traditional Keetoowah. Sorry, I don't know much else.
