I havent been around much to post but I've been reading and learning:D

Last night while surfing I typed in my family surname and came across some interesting information. It seems that my family, who were slaves, where the "property" of one John Waller of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. This slave owner actually owned Kunte Kenta, descendent of Alex Haley. Its possible that he may be a descendent!

But I digress. The question I have is this. Does anyone have any information on the tribe that was in this surrounding county? My gg-grandfather was Milton Waller and he was married to Mary Waller. It is believed that she was Native American, I was told she was Cherokee but I am beginning to wonder if she was Saponi. The problem is I do not know what her Native American name would have been seeing as she probably changed it.

I know this is kind of vague but its all I have to work with right now. Any help would be appreciated!

Pittsylvania county was in solid Saponi territory. The Cheraw were also there (also Siouan, though from tribes that had been in the upper south much longer). http://www.jmu.edu/montpelier/2004Fall/RomanceHistory.shtml, http://ncmuseumofhistory.org/meetthestatue/statues.html

So Alex Haley's ancestor was in Pittsylvania county? I believe I've heard it said he also had some Indian ancestry. Interesting.

Linda, this is so very confusing! I just have no idea where to start with my maternal 2-great grandmother Mary Waller. The family records that I am holding in my hand state that she was Cherokee. But Cherokee werent in Pittsylvania Co. were they? How would she find herself in Saponi territory?
