I was told all of my life that my family was white. My cousin made a family book with pictures. I saw my grandmother, great aunts, and great grandfather's picture and they appear to be of a mixed race.

My ggrandfather was John Stadler Rudd, b 4/22/1847 d 4/25/1909

John's Father was Fanklin G Rudd, b 8/16/1816 d abt/1896
married to Mary M Evas, b abt/1816 d abt/1896
Both in Caswell County, N.C.

Frank's Father was Jeremiah Rudd, b abt/1792 in Chesterfield County, VA
d abt/1863 in Caswell County
married Susannah Evans 1/21/1811 b abt/1787 d 7/14/1867 in Caswel County, N.C.

Jeremiah's Father was James Rudd, b 1710-1720 in Henrico County,VA
d prior to 4/10/1797 in Chesterfield County, VA
married Mary Pleasant b abt/1720 in Chesterfield County,VA d abt 1803 in Chesterfield County VA

James's Father was John Rudd, Sr., b abt 1678 in James City,VA d 1749 in Henrico County, VA, married Avis Whitaker, b 1681 in Henico County,VA

Welcome, Bludhoun. Use the search feature on the top nav bar for the word "Rudd" you'll find some good research and some likely cousins who've posted in the past.

If you're not familiar with the term, free persons of color, it was a legal racial definition used in ante-bellum days. The majority of these people Heinegg claims were the children of white servant women and non-white men. Many were Indian or mixed-blooded Indians. There was a lot of economic pressure to blur the distinctions and make more people eligible for hereditary slavery.
