Osiyo Shirley~ I am so happy for you!! Sorry abt the "sad part", though. Could you post a lil more info (b&d dates, locations, etc~) so I could see if our Sparks tie in?~~I have Mary "Betsy" Sparks b 1772 Prince William VA d 1845 Nicholas Co WV (I guess it was VA, till the 1860s)~ (Civil War). I have her father & mother listed as George & Sarah (LNU) Sparks, but can't verify when or where they were born~possibly Maryland~but at least I know they were in Prince Wm when Mary was born. Anyway~I'm so happy for you~:) ~Blessings~Greydove~^~ PS Mary m Joel Hamrick 1789 at Kesslers Cross Lanes, Nicholas Co VA. ~Way to go Shirley!!!!

Thanks Greydove:) I have not come across anything more than the newspaper clipping from 1959...in fact in all my searching I have not come across this particular Lloyd or his family:confused:

Here are the names listed in the clipping: Lloyd Lewis Sparks, 37, survived by his father Hayman Sparks of Richwood, 1/2 brother Raymond Bambrick of Lewisburg, three sisters Miss Arabela Sparks of Richwood, Mable Sparks and Mary Lee Edandho of Cambridge, OH. He is buried in Cool Springs cemetery, Diana, WV. This is all I have for now, but at least I now have a place to start:)

Yes, Shirley, you have something to go on. Just thought I'd let you know, I did a little digging on Ancestry.com where I have a tree, and ran across the newspaper article you refered to~I know where you're coming from on sad~I had a similar revelation on newspaper archives abt the death of my father at a young age of 44. Anyway, I think the 1/2 bro Raymond was "Ham(b)rick"(I've found it spelled both ways on various recds)~which is another tie~in to my Sparks as referred to in prev. post. I was thinking, there wasn't any descendents listed in that article for your grandfather~could he have been widowed or divorced, I wonder? I'll keep my eyes peeled for your Sparks as I search for my lines, cause I feel ours are connected~Nicolas Co WV~must be!! Good Luck and take care~;) Grey PS~An after~thought~the article I referred to abt my father~He and Mom were divorced and I was one of five of his descendents~not mentioned in the article. He died in Yuma, AZ under suspicous circumstances. Later

Greydove,

I am sorry about your father, these stories are very sad, but probably not all that uncommon for the time and place.

I thought the same thing when I saw your Hamri(c)k surname. I do not think these commonalities mere coincidence. I would appreciate anything you come across.

Blessings,

Shirley

That article is very good....since it listed his father also.......so it should give you a very good bump in the right direction.

I'll try to do some searching for you alil bit.....

Apprently that newspaper has a "Hayman Sparks" listed.....I'm not sure what it has exactly...

It may be too far off....since it appears to be a nevada newspaper.....but it is in the year 1956. maybe it's a article about a trip this Raymond made...I don't know......but you can check it out and see what the article is.

::Harvey D. (stands for Dyer?) Sparks was born December 2, 1824, probably in Lee County, Virginia, before immigrating to (Owsley County?) Kentucky.

He married Nancy (conflicting information as to whether she was a Johnson or a Wells, leaning toward Wells at the moment).

Harvey and Nancy Sparks appear on the 1850 Owsley County, Kentucky Census, Kentucky District. Harvey is listed as age 26, occupation is a farmer, and is originally from Virginia. Nancy is 23 and from Kentucky. They have three children: Polly, 5; Jane, 3; and Isaiah, 5 months (5/12).

On the same page of the 1850 Owsley Census appears an Ephraim Sparks, Sr. and his wife, Charlotte, originally from North Carolina. There is also an Ephraim Sparks, Jr. and his wife, Sarah, and their daughters, Ann and Nancy. Ephraim and Sarah are from Virginia as well. In the John D. and Phoebe Spencer household, there lives a Tobias Sparks and his wife, Peggy, from Virginia. They work as farm laborers. It appears that the Sparks family settled near each other when they migrated from Virginia.

Harvey and Nancy Sparks appear again on the 1860 Owsley County, Kentucky Census, Swiftville. Here Harvey is listed as a age 39 and a farmer, Nancy is 34, Mary A., 14; Deborah J., 13; Sarah J., 11; James, 8; America, 6; Caroline, 3; and Margaret, 1/12.

Also mentioned on the same census sheet is a James Sparks and his family. He and his wife, Temperance, are listed as coming to Owsley from Virginia. They have five children, all born in Kentucky, Nancy, Ephraim, Cordilla, Temperance, and Evaline.

On the 1880 Wolfe County, Kentucky Census: Sparks, Harvey 53 farmer; Nancy 50; Emily 15; Hamilton S. 11.

::Here is what Mamaw had to say about Harvey Sparks, her grandfather:

Family oral tradition has it that Harvey was captured by Indians (Native Americans) while traveling in Missouri. He was freed by an Indian with whom he had made friends. After Harvey was cut loose, he escaped by crossing a river with a grapevine that he tied to a tree so that he could not be followed. During his escape, he hid in hollow logs at night. He would travel by day only because he was being tracked at night only. Sometimes his former captors would come so close to him while he was hiding that he was afraid that they would hear his heart beating.

What’s interesting about this story is that while I find no record of Harvey going to Missouri (that doesn’t mean that he didn’t), Mamaw and several of her siblings were born in Missouri. Mickleberry and America moved to Missouri (along with some other Townsends I believe) for a brief period of time in the 1880s and then moved back to Kentucky.

Mamaw also said that Harvey’s last name what not originally Sparks. She believed it was Bellamy, but she was not sure. She only vaguely remembered that he changed it because there might have been a problem with the law, or because of the encounter with the Indians.

I’ve pondered this story, and, on the face of it, do not believe it to be literally true. However, I wonder if it might contain a nugget of truth as passed down over the decades of memory. It sounds a lot like the story of one of Temperance Spencer’s husbands.

Shirley Brewer Watkins, a Spencer family cousin, tells about how Frank Spencer a.k.a. Jay Morris/Marsh was from Pennsylvania, and to hide from the law he changed his identity. When he moved to Virginia, he learned that Spencer was a common name so he chose the name of Frank Spencer. When he met Temperance and married her it was an illegal ceremony because of the alias. It is not known what happened to him after the birth of their second child. Either he ran off, or he was arrested, or he died. Evidently, he told Temperance the truth before their first son was born, and then he disappeared from history. The story was handed down to her son, Franklin Marsh Spencer, who passed it on down. After Frank left, Temperance, with her father, brothers and their spouses and children moved from Virginia to Kentucky. Temperance later married John Sparks and had several more children.

Hey Shirley, Thats great news! I'm trying to connect our Sparks and now Hamricks. I found a Haymond Sparks on a census, but the spelling isn't exact~Hayman/Haymond? That's not unusual though from what I understand the census takers changed spellings and other things such as race, etc. If it is the same as your forefather, I traced him back to George and Sarah Sparks. I'll keep looking and post what I find~ Good luck to you too!! :) Greydove

Way to go on the spelling variation:) I found Haymond on the 1900 census. My grandfather Lloyd's middle name is Lewis as is Haymond's brother? Looks like Nathan is the father...I also found WWII draft card...though the bd is 1878...he is listed as W, Brown eyes, hair and dark complexion. Looks like in 1920 he was a boarder of the Gaff family, though his bd is 1888, I think these maybe typos...how many Haymond Sparks could be in Richwood, WV?...if you've ever been there...you know what I mean...lol.

I will see what else I can dig up:)

:) Greydove

Hey Greydove,

Found this Sparks tree that lists my line to Nathan...Haymond's father. I contacted the owner to see if he has more family info:) Here's the link...

Wow, Shirley! I am amazed at this research. And starting with the 1st generation James Sparks~this is who I am trying to tie my 4th Greatgrandmother to as a brother ~they are 10 yrs apart in age and were born in and lived in the same places. Also, if they were siblings~parents were George and Sarah. (One of my brick walls~oh~no!) Funny, I also noticed a Bailes m into the line in early 1900s in Nicholas Co WV~he has to be kin~thats my Greatgrandma Bailes b place. Oh Shirley, I am so happy for you and I know we are kin~ I believe George W Sparks was born in 1740/50 and possibly was a rev war solder. Don't know what Sarah's maiden name was~but am looking for their info and to tie Mary Elizabeth Sparks to your James. Keep me posted and I will you ~likewise~~Later~ :) Greydove~^~

SPARKS (http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=*v126t1122&id=I151) b: 1782 in Pendleton, Virginia ~~Now if we can find the right tree that lists them together as siblings, I think we will be able to confirm the link. Then, Sara(h)'s maiden name, well, that could be another mountain to climb, but, anyway, I read that lineage you posted a little closer, and I couldn't believe there were Fitzwaters, Fosters, and Martins, as well as Bailes, married into Sparks. It made me realize more than ever, how families moved in groups and cross~married up and down the tree, you know? More later~~Greydove:) ~^~

Thanks Greydove. And, yep, definitely cousins through the Summers.

I also came across a thread that you posted about going to the Lebanon Pow Wow back in August of this year. I didn't go to it, but my mom worked the front gates both days.

Hi Greydove,

Sounds good. I'll will have to remember to check the schedule around that time next year. Everybody in this house plays some sort of ball (baseball, softball, football), so spring through fall we are pretty busy, which is why I tend to post more on here in the wintertime. I have never went to a Powwow before. My mom has asked me before to go with her (last weekend they even had a Christmas thing in Lebanon she asked me about). I don't know, just never went.

Talk to ya later,

Stacey
