Seems like I have been on every forum there is regarding black native american issues.
I am looking for any info or connection to, the surnames Waddy and/or Hughes of Louisa or Goochland Counties Va.
Also any info regarding the possible Native American origin of the name Cuetta.

Hughes is on the list of SE Native American family surnames, with no tribe specified, meaning it does occur among families of NA descent in the Southeast, but the tribal origins are unclear (probably intermixed).

Dear Searcher:
In regards to the surname Hughes of Virgina, & American Indian connections here is all I have to offer you. In the 1700's a Scottish hunter, called Trader Hughes married Nicketti (name means: Dew Drop). Nicketti was the daughter of OPECHANCANOUGH, he was Chief of the Pamunkey Tribe. At one time he was Chief of thirty Tribes, that were all a part of the Powahatan Chiefdom. Chief Opechancanough was the brother of Chief Powhatan.
Trader Hughes & Nicketti opened a trading post on Otter Creek circa 1720. This information is from a book titled "INDIAN ISLAND IN AMHERST COUNTY", by Peter W. Houck & Mintcy D. Maxham. The author's of this book got their information from another book called "Cabell's & Their Kin". It only includes one child of Trader Hughes, which is Elizabeth Hughes. So I don't have any information on their other children. Good luck & I hope this can point you in the right direction.

To: Itconani & Vance,
First, Itconani the book I referred to says that, the Trading Post was 1/2 mile up Otter Creek from the James River. There is now a recreational lake & campground in this area. This of course is in Virginia. I'll try to find more info on Otter Creek & the Trading Post, for you.
Vance,You are welcome. You may find the book in the library, if not it is available at your local Barnes & Noble book store. It was written in 1993. If you have trouble finding it please let me know!
Sincerely,
Coheelady

It is interesting to find the Waddy-Hughes suranmes mentioned connected to this region. For many years researchers of Mitchell County, North Carolina have sought the source of the oral history told by older people (80 and Older) . It is maintained by these people that most of those buried in the Hughes Cemetary by the Presbytarian church in Buladean were Indian. The ancestors of most of the people living there came from the part of Virginia mentioned in the previous post. I descend from Jane Waddy and Anthony Street. Allied families to the Streets and Waddys were the Davenports. The proginator of the Davenports of Mitchell County was Davis Davenport. The mother of Davis Davenport's
children was a Pamunkey/Chickahominey. The Davenports married Bakers. One of which was the father of David Baker, the founder of Bakersville, NC (Mitchell County). I am also seeking the ancestors of my great greatgrandmother Emaline Hughes.
