This is one of my favorite passages from Robert K. Thomas and he says it so right.
"Some Indians are so far down that all they can do is just gossip about their relatives or get drunk and cause trouble. If you try to be a good man and help people you'll just get clawed to pieces by unhappy, jealous people. They can't stand to see anybody do anything constructive. Those of us who are not in such bad shape have just let things get to this piont. We just keep to ourselves and don't stick our necks out while our communities flush down the drain. That third step has taken us further down into the darkness."
