Hello, I'm new to the site. I've just started researching my family history on my own and I'm having a hard time finding information. I'm looking for information on my mother's great great grandmother--Anne (Walker) Travis and other family members. My mother's grandmother was Leana Dale Easter. I did see an earlier post, but I didn't see any current info. Any help is appreciated.

You know...I have ran across the name Dupree a few times....I can't remember just where at exactly though.

Welcome to the Forum :)

Which states are your ancestors from??

Do you know which tribes your family says they came from?

Always remember to never forget about the women of family trees...alot of times the Native American blood will come from a woman...so never forget about them.

Not all of these names are going to be Saponi...but alot of them are....so I'll just go and post this one list of Native American surnames......these are all Melungeon common surnames.

Now I did notice you had the name "walker" in your list......It just so happens that my good friend and cherokee elder has that last name....Levi Walker.....he is here in Ga.

I'll do some researching for you real quick and see what I can come up with.

Maggie Nesbit....Georgia.....listed on the Guion Miller Cherokee roll seeking enrollment....I'd say she applied around 1898-1903. I'll show the rest of the surnames you mentioned thats on the Guion Miller roll seeking enrollment to the Cherokee.

Remember where it says "I.T" this means they was living in Oklahoma aka Indian Territory.

On the final rolls I did find one person with the Last name of Easter..however no first name was given.....here is what the final rolls are: This is the index to the names of individuals entitled to enrollment on the rolls of the various tribes comprising the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory (Oklahoma).

<TABLE class=InLineFormTABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3><TBODY><TR><TD class=InLineDataTD>175 </TD><TD class=InLineDataTD>264 (http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/finalroll.php?s_roll=264) </TD><TD class=InLineDataTD>Easter </TD><TD class=InLineDataTD> </TD><TD class=InLineDataTD>Chickasaw By Blood</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

There is tons and tons of Walkers listed on the Final rolls.....20 pages of just names.....so I'll just give a link to that

Ok I have found some more stuff on one of the Easter family lines.

It just so happens this lines is connected to the Collins, Harris, Gibson, Jones, Mullins, Martin, Scott, Turner, Yarbrough, and some others which the people on this board are related to.

It also just so happens this Easter line has a "indian" listed in their tree but no name is known.

From the photos of the people in this Easter family...it is clear they are part of us :)

http://www.easterfamily.net/

I think everyone else on this site may want to look at that website also....I'm finding it very very interesting!!!

Referring to post#4, Melungeon surnames. While all these names do have lines that are mixed bloods, to call them melungeon is to give the term "melungeon" a VERY general meaning.
For example, I am a Dalton. I accept that the Daltons are VA mixed blood ndns..... the Daltons who went to WVA are part of the core group identified as WVA "Guineas". I monitor all the Dalton forums and have NEVER seen a Dalton self-identify as "melungeon".

That was the list from http://www.creativework.org/Atlanta%20Melungeon%20Project.htm

I'm not entirely sure which Dalton line they was working on or reading on.

I just added the list for the Native american aspects....since it has such a large amount of surnames in that list.

I've actually tried to contact the people that run that "Atlanta Melungeon Project" but they never reply back to me....weird since I'm born and raised in Atlanta and nearly everyone of my Ancestor's surnames are on the list they have on their site.....I was trying to inform them of the indian community of Paulding County Ga.....I don't know...I just can never get them to ever reply. I've actually been interested in which Newman family they was researching or reading about when they added the "Newman" surname to the list since thats my current last name :)

I'm realy interested in that Easter family now since when I checked out the Easter family that I linked to in a earlier post in this thread....it had soo many East coast Native surnames listed in the family tree and even had a -"unknown" Indian- listed in the family tree as well.

Welcome Imajemi,

If you post names and dates for the family members you are looking for on the genealogy section, someone may be able to locate some specifics for you:)

Again welcome,

Shirley

The problem is that alot of this, these people/surnames listed as Melungeon, is at best, just assumed. For example, my whole Adkins line, and I descend from the same line more than once, is listed on a Melungeon site as being, as above, "Melungeon/Melungeon Related, Powhatan Indian". I am not talking just the Adkins surname here, I am talking about first and last names listed on the site/sites.

Now, while it is true that the Chickahominy and my Adkins line share names, it is still debated, and debatable, as to if there was or wasn't a connection, and if it was the Adkins, or another surname married in that is where the connection lies.

Then we have all the tie-in families listed above...

Steele/Casteel/Castle
Chapman
Cole
Davis
Dalton
French
Jackson
Johnson/Johnston
Kiser
Minard/Mainard
Osborn/Osborne/Osburn
Sammons
Sizemore
Stewart
Watts

...from my ancestry alone, and none of these families show anywhere, except on Melungeon sites & in Melungeon books, as being Melungeon. In fact, alot of them show Shawnee and Powhatan ancestry.

My wife's maternal side is Bowling/Caudill and again, no Melungeon in that family either. Her uncle spent years upon years researching those lines, and again there was a Shawnee connection (Bowling Baker), a Cherokee connection, and a Western Blackfoot connection in the later years.

It has become such a thing that "now" everyone "thinks" just because their surname is in this list, that they are of Melungeon descent. The fact of the matter is that these families listed above from my line alone are erroneously called "Melungeon" or were somehow tied in with them. Point blank, this is not the case.

Of course, some of these "upper echelon" authorities of the Melungeon movement say "Well just because we have your surname listed, doesn't mean your family is Melungeon", which became their "slide out" statement, yet again, they state first and last names on many sites and in books who "are" my ancestors, and they were not Melungeon, nor am I.

One cannot take a common name like "Jack Johnson" and just create a race for his make-up, nor can they just "assume" that this "Jack Johnson" came from the Johnson line they want him to fit into. You cannot "go on faith" or else you wind up just fitting into what the natives call the "wannabe" tribe.

The only truth in the lists above concerning my Adkins line is that they are believed to have had some sort of connection/possible descention from the Powhatan tribes. The rest is all an assumption that as everyone knows I am strongly against because it's basis is theoretic and not based on fact.

From my daily research of nearly 8 years now on the Adkins family, I cannot find one shred of evidence supporting the Melungeon theory, nor any of the families connected. Shawnee? Yes. Powhatan? A strong possibility.

I have Carmel Indian connections as well, mainly from my Gibson line. Records indicate she came from Pennsylvania, as I assume quite a few Gibsons in Highland County had. I can find no evidence supporting Melungeon for her, nor the families in Carmel either. What is known about the Carmel Indians is that they are made up of a mixed bloodline of African American, Native American, and White. Tri-Racial? Yes Melungeon? No.

My talks with people from the area is that they detest being lied about in books and online (sites, videos, etc.) The famous book on the Carmel Indians was from the author's memories as a child, from what I have heard, and the man is getting up there in age. My mother, even myself, cannot remember everything that went on when we were children, and I doubt many past thirty years old can remember much either. Memories are not facts, and this is what upsets those in the Carmel area about the book.

So the whole Melungeon craze has just basically taken every surname it can and identifeid each as having ties to, or being, Melungeon. One can argue the fact with me until the cows come home, but the truth differs greatly from the fantasy. The YouTube video where the speaker states that Kennedy was right and that if your last name is every name he called out, including Adkins, then you are Melungeon is just proof of the insanty this whole thing has sprung into.

I have successfully debunked all the so-called evidence presented by the theorists from "blood diseases/physical traits" to "Cherokee Turbans" and everything in between. Again "fact over fantasy" prevails and the only thing I am guilty of is just uncovering the truth and presenting it. It's not to cause a problem, but I see no "gain" for anyone to be coddled to by my not saying anything that contradicts the nonsense I see perpetuated on a daily basis. I feel that if you are talking about my family, you are talking about me. So therefore I have a right to speak out on the subject. It may hurt others' feelings, but so far no one has considered my feelings/my family's feelings, now have they?, with all thse books and videos and websites...everyone wishing I would shut up and not speak out on the new ethnic race people are so quick to jump on.

My intentions, though lately it has appeared otherwise, is to politely, yet with no punches pulled, express my opinion and knowledge on the subject. Again, I don't wish to hurt anyone, but feel it is important to state my side of things in a manner where facts are presented, and not just a heaping can of gobbledy-gook.

It is said on this forum that I am basically good hearted with a blunt writing style, and I agree with that assessment. I could go elsewhere, much to many's thrill of that prospect, but as the moderator stated, allowing a debate on this controversial subject makes the site more than other sites. Other sites I have been to find my posts deleted in order to not change the status quo theories those sites present. In other words, I am stifled to present my case because no one wants to hear from me on the subject, yet they continue to write about my family while censoring my posts by deleting them.
As I stated in an earilier post...Since when is what's good for the goose no longer good for the gander? (explaining my thoughts when I posted this question earlier).

To just lump entire families into one group and have no basis in doing so, as the moderator above stated, is just really just puts the whole thing into a general context and actually makes anything presented by those who calim to be the experts of all things Melungeon into the "I don't believe you" catagory. I have watched websites that censored me from posting crumble, and a few are now crumbling as we speak. They don't want the voices of us "So-Called" Melungeons to be out there, and it is now showing that they have little leg left to stand on.

I hear ya.

I only use the Melungeon names as way of looking for native american links in surnames....pretty good start for some people that are just starting their search for their native background.

I don't think my Collins line was part of the melungeons either....I mean Vardy went to newman's ridge while mine went from granville to York county with the Catawba's....then went to rutherford Nc with the Catawbas.....some of the the blood vardy had I do have also.....since his grandfather would have been my great great great great great great great grandfather (however many Greats is in there lol). So it's hard to say if Vardy's father and Vardy's uncles was melungeon or only mixed with white and native.

Thomas Collins Sr. born 1710 & his descendants According to documented family research old Thomas Collins Sr. born before 1710 was the father and or grandfather of the historical Tennessee Melungeon Collins. At least one of Thomas Collins parents (unknown) was probably full blood Saponi Indian.

Other Collins men who were associated with Thomas Collins Sr. in New Kent, later Louisa County, Va. were probably his brothers. They were Samuel Collins, John Collins and William Collins.

William Collins is my direct blood line

This party of Saponia ( Monasukapanough) Indians left that county and some of these may have been the same group that formed the settlement near Hillsborough, North Carolina in 1750. Which was the same neck of the woods where old Thomas Collins migrated, as we follow him through land transactions.(Ref in Melungeons And other pioneer Families).

The 1750 tax list of Granville County, NC list the following: William Bowling 1 tithe, James Bowlin 1 tithe, Gideon Bunch 2 tithes (Micajer and William), Thomas Collins Sr. 1 tithe, Samuel Collins 1 tithe, John Collins 1 tithe, Thomas Gibson with tithes Charles and George Gibson.

So I say at this point the Melungeon part had not become the thing....I would not really consider these people listed Melungeon....

1860 Jeremiah Collins....b. 3/19/1779, d. 8/4/1873

The apocryphal story on Jeremiah is that he migrated from South Carolina to St. Clair Co., Alabama with his young wife and little else. He was so poor that while everyone else had a wagon, he only had a sled. He came into a great amount of land very suddenly. Supposedly, he befriended an Indian who told him of a dream wherein a white man gave him a gun. Jeremiah gave the Indian a gun, and not too long later, told the Indian that he had a dream wherein an Indian gave him some land. Perhaps this is how Jeremiah came into the land. Perhaps not. Jeremiah embraced Christianity late in life at the insistence of his son, a prominent Baptist preacher. It is told that, too frail to resist, Jeremiah was strapped into a chair and dunked in the Coosa River. Some researchers believe that Jeremiah was Cherokee, or possibly Creek. I must agree that the photo bespeaks Native American ethnicity. In Jeremiah's time, it was unheard of for a man not to have a religious affiliation. That he did not embrace Christianity until so late in life also indicates that he converted from Native American Beliefs.

Thats the story that came with that photo.

I'd say he could have maybe been a cousin or Nephew to Susannah Collins.....Remember from the SC newspaper article that Drury dobbins (susannah Collins son) was a Baptist Preacher.
