Tracking Down My Very Mixed Roots!!

All my life, I've been told by both my parents (who divorced when I was 7) that I have both Cherokee & Blackfoot lineage on my paternal grandmother's side. Since the divorce, I was not in touch with my father or his family, so I don't know much.

My paternal grandmother's name is/was Jessie Williams (maiden name; never married). She had 2 brothers that I know of (Bus and Wes). I was told I had family in Greenville, SC. I was born in Charleston, SC, but raised in Brooklyn, NY. My father's name is James Edward Williams.

If anyone out there can be of any assistance with helping me find my ancestry, I would be most appreciative. Unfortunately, I have virtually nothing to go on. Is this even possible?

Williams is listed as associated with Saponi or Creek families. We believe Eastern Blackfoot ID's refer to the generic Saponi (Eastern Siouan) people, and they ranged into SC, so yes, it is possible this is what is being referred to in your family. The Cherokee ID is a bit slippery, since many people in that area were called Cherokee who are now considered to have been something else. The Lumbee, for example, were for a time referred to as the Cherokee of Robeson County, and there are Cherokee bloodlines there, but there are a good many other predominant tribal roots there.

Does any of your Williams migerate north into West Virginia? I have two WILLIAMS lines.
HUGH2 WILLIAMS (JEREMIAH1) was born 1767 in Va., and died Aft. 1850 in Nicholas Co. WVa.. He married JANE BELL 1781 in Rockingham,Va.. She was born 1769 in Greenbrier Co.


WILLIAM3 WILLIAMS (HUGH2, JEREMIAH1) was born 1794 in Greenbrier Co. Va.., and died 1869 in Nicholas Co. WV. He married (1) REBECCA HEATERS. He married (2) ELIZABETH JONES 1818 in Kanawha Co. WV, daughter of THOMAS JONES and LAVINAH THOMAS. She was born 1796 in Greenbrier Co. WV, and died 1882 in Nicholas Co

Both Jones and Williams have rummors of NA blood but nothing verified.
