We hear, by letter and by private advices, that a horrible murder was perpertrated in Scuffletown on last Saturday night. The victim was an old colored man, some sixty years old, named Samuel Locklear, and the reputed murderer is a man named Brady, a recruit who lately joined Company K, 4th U. S. Artillery, now stationed at Eureka, near Buie's store. It is alleged that Brady, while under the influence of liquor, went to Locklear's house and demanded that he show him the way to the house of one of the Lowry gang. This Locklear attempted to do, and while walking in advance of Brady, was shot and killed. The soldier, it is said, then proceeded to the house of another colored man and made the same demand. He to walked in advance of the soldier, who cocked his gun to shoot him, but hearing the click of the lock, he broke and ran into the woods, thus saving his life. The report of the gun, when Locklear was killed, was distinctly heard at the camp of the soldiers.
On Sunday some of Locklear's family came into the camp and made complaint to the commanding officer, who took the matter in hand, when Brady was recognized by them as being the party who left the house with Locklear. An examination was had, which resulted in Brady being taken to Lumberton on Monday, and committed to jail.
