I've been working on my family history for many years. My great uncle told us that the father of Edward Jackson came from Delaware and was a full blood Delaware Indian. Later Edward his son Pete and his son Wilbur told children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that they were Blackfoot Indians. I have found over the years other people from this specific area in Delaware that refer to themselves as Blackfoot Indian because they come from the area known as Blackfoot Town. Today when I document my families Indian blood I list it as Southern Blackfoot/Nanticoke/Lenni-Lenape(Delaware).

My family names are: Jackson, Green(e) (connects also too Hughes, Barclay, Conway and Nutter of Nanticoke/Tyaskin,Maryland), Stewart, McCready, Bowyer(Boyer), Collins, Teagle, Milbourne, Adams, Lloyd, Fitchett, Ward, Gumby, Lane, Jones, Harris, Selby, Cottman, Douglas, Johnson and Evans.

Names you will also find among us are: Bell, Hutt (Harmon/Harman is mothers maiden name), Whittington, Custis, Williams, Smith, Bishop, Dennis, Scarborough, Sterling, Leatherbury, Handy, Waters, and Somers.

Our family lived until present day in the Marumsco/Shelltown area of Maryland's lower Eastern Shore. This area is directly across the water from Virginia. In a matter of minutes by boat we can be in the State of Virginia.

My fathers grandmother Ella Ellen Selby married Charles Harris. Ella made it clear to everyone that she was NOT black, that in fact she was Indian from Virginia. She never told anyone (at least to their recollection) what Tribe she was from. I always knew from my earliest age that my fathers family was Native American and Black.
Other names in his family include: Doanes (Downes), Brittingham & Nutter.

I tried to include as many of my Family names as possible from off of the top of my head. The more work I do the more stuff I dig up. I am constantly search and have recently been given a photo of a woman that taken in the late 1800's. She is obviously Native and she is definately a relative. I think she possibly maybe my great great grandmother Mary Stewart McCready.

Hey there! I have the same surnames of Evans,Collins,Adams, and Bell in my family. The farthest back I can track them though is back to Pennsylvania. Do you know the full names and maybe dob and place?

JJJ Hutton,

I just sent you a detailed response, but Saponitown.com said it didn't recognize me as a member ("in good standing?" ... did I inadvertently forget to mail in my yearly dues?) and the internet goblins spirited it away to the mysterious electronic ether. :-(

Briefly, what I said was that Dr. Helen Rountree lists the following names in her book, EASTERN SHORE INDIANS OF MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA:

Collins, Custis, Jones, Johnson, Bishop, and Williams.

Well, thank you all for holding down the fort while I was out of town. Welcome JJJ, we've corresponded before, maybe that's how you knew of this forum, or maybe you just surfed in. In any case, sure am glad you made it.

One thing JJJ mentioned to me that I remember, is that there is a reference to Blackfoot town. Who was the author of that book, JJJ? I don't remember offhand.

We've got plans to dump this old board for a newer version. I don't know why you sometimes can't get in, Roy. My apologies. Sorry you're letter got lost. I'll try and send you one that way and see what happens.

I'm wondering if you all are aware of this site below. It is specifically concerned with Lenape family research in DE, MD, VA and PA., most specifically Delaware.

I have never heard of Blacktown and am very interested in learning more about this.

The name Evans is seen a lot in Hollister, NC and the surrounding area in Halifax county, mostly seen in the Haliwa-Saponi tribe.
