Well, Deb, our husbands, and I went to the Meskwaki powwow in Iowa on Friday night. Had a great time. We even danced, although her husband beat us out there. We were both timid, but since he went...

Our families lived among the Meskwaki in the hills of eastern IA when they first came from OH, so it seemed special.

Glad to hear you've taken a turn out there. How did it feel? What kind of regalia have you put together?

Congratulations!

Elkriver:

Thanks for the links. I certainly enjoyed the powwow last summer. My cousins and I have talked of going back every year. One cousin grew up attending these powwows and knows some of the veterans. My grandmother said we were Meskwaki, but I don't believe she was correct. I think the family was Shawnee and/or a mixture of Algonquin tribes who moved to Iowa from Ohio in 1840 and lived among the Meskwaki in the hills of NE IA.

I didn't know that they extended their school to high school. I remember some controversy about the K-8 school itself from years ago. IA was then reluctant to allow any schools other than public schools. Both the Meskwaki schools and the Amish schools were controversial at one time.

Hurray, Techteach! Very happy for you.

Elkriver, thanks for the link. I'm liking Meskwaki Nation, too.
