According to several family members my great-grandfather is supposed to be at least part Blackfoot Indian. From what I have researched so far, I cannot make the connection. His name was Benjamin Franklin Marsh, born in Oct. 21, 1863 in Madison County, VA to Peachy Lamb and Layton Marsh, Layton was born in Greene County, VA (DOB not sure) and Peachy was born in Greene County also (DOB not sure) they were married March 19, 1845, in Greene County. Layton Marsh was the son of Peter Marsh and Lucy Jollett.

Is there anyway I can find out if indeed we are connected to the Blackfoot? My mother is very interested in finding out, more just to satisfy curiosity and the family lore. She is 71 and not in the best of health so I am working diligently, although I am pretty new at this and learning as I go.

Could you possibly steer me in the direction I should be heading?

Thank you for any help you can provide it is really appreciated.

Cecelia contacted me earlier with this question. This was my response:

Marsh and Lamb are both VA Indian family names. Marsh is associated with Pamunkey and Catawba, which is interesting, since I've often wondered if some of the Blackfoot (Sissipaha) tribe didn't run to the Catawba. I don't have any specifics on the tribe connected to the Lamb surname. How were your people classified racially, white, mullatto or black? (Those were the only racial categories allowed.) It looks like a diligent job of tracking down your family should be very productive. Congratulations. For my money, your gr-grandfather's claims to being (eastern siouan) Blackfoot are very credible.

I spoke to Emma this afternoon and she had just been reading up on the ties between the Pamunkey, Catawba, and I believe she also mentioned the Sissipaha tied in there.

mush / marsh family very traceable - but does not match pamunkey records, with these names.

maybe earlier? and then migrated west?
they could have left with the Catawba bunch or at the same time? but leaving out on their own very unlike what the families were trying to do at that time (consolidate blood and indianess)
so maybe earlier when the threat to tribal (family) land loss was low?
interesting - lamb is a later nottoway surname in southhampton county.
