When I was 14 years old my grandfather told me we were Blackfoot on his side and cherokee on my grandmothers side. I have traced my grandfathers family back to Alamance County NC. I have had a hard time and cannot find the connection. His name was Egbert Patton born Union County Tn, his father was James T. Patton, grandfather was Matthew McD. Patton born Alamance NC to Samuel and Polly Patton. I would appreciate any information concerning this line and the Blackfoot connection. In addition my Grandmother was Cherokee supposed on the Lingar Line. She was from Claiborne County Tennessee. Her father was James D. Lingar, her grandfather was Lewis Lingar, his father was John Lingar, His father was John Lingar and this John was in the revolutionary war from NC. Any ideas? Thanks

You're family has certainly lived in a lot of the places that are common to Blackfoot-identified people. Alamance county is the site of many archeological digs of the Eastern Siouan, which I believe these Blackfoot were part of.
The Occaneechi Band of the Saponi have lived there for many generations and still do. They just received their state recognition. I know some of their people have that ID in their families, though they don't quite know what to make of it. (So no, don't go asking them for enrollment to join the tribe. The Blackfoot ID won't do the trick.)
Tennessee is also very frequently mentioned by Blackfoot descendants. Paden can be an Indian name in the southeast. Perhaps your Patton may be a varient.
