Yes, that will probably be the best site for now....it replaced tipofthefeather. You may have to check several other sites as well....I use that for the main one, but, also look at powwows.com.

I'm planning to go to the Monacan powwow this Saturday in Elon,VA.Where does one turn from Rt 130 after reaching Elon Crossroads?

This will be my 1st powwow.I visited 2 sites covering powwow etiquette and hopefully,I'll not make an a** of myself:D

Regarding etiquette,it looks to me that there might well be certain things common to the overall powwow experience.I could be wrong;if so correct me.

If that's the case,that parallels with what I've experienced as a Byzantine/
Greek Orthodox Christian in that the Byzantine rite has many fixed elements
but slight cultural variation. The variations are not to the extent that I might
say,"I'm in the Greek church (am currently in another jurisdiction) and don't
know what to do!"

Maybe powwows are like that too, having quite a bit of commonality.
Comments?

Roca:)

P.S.-Hope to meet some of you there.:)

You could always call the phone number listed on that website. Most of the time the pow wows are good about having signs out for the general public to find their way.

As far as etiquette goes, listen to the emcee. There are times when photographing is not allowed, during an Eagle dance or when an Eagle feather is dropped. Flag ceremonies, Veteran's dance....some of the times as well....but, most emcees are very good to tell the audience.

And one that we were discussing this weekend, was to walk up and touch regalia without permission. People can't seem to resist, and they don't realize the items have special meanings.

And the most important one in my book, respect for the circle.

Take some sunscreen if you're light as I am...and plenty of water. It tends to get hot out in the sun. And make sure you take a comfy lawn chair....and most of all enjoy the drums. We won't be able to make one that far away, at least not this year. Have fun and let us know all the details when you get back.

Well, I am glad now that we had not made any firm plans. Saturday we have been "invited" into a cemetery in our community to which most "white" folks have never been. And we hope to get it surveyed and online.

Then a dear friend of ours passed and his memorial is also this weekend. So looks like we will be hanging around Person county. Hope you have a great time...I am told it's a good one to attend.

Found it easy enough.Took 1 1/2 hrs to get there.(My 2nd one.)

The area was a little hillier than Elon (Amherst CO,VA-Monacan Powwow).Site was adjacent to a gift shop/trading post.(Shenandoah CO,VA)

Didn't seem to be as many people there as were at the Monacan.

Scanned a book of Native humor while there;laughed my #** off!

Overall,I had a good time and plan to come back next year.

Not sure if I'll make Hampton 2 wks from today. It's easy to get to but I
think it might be a 2-3 hr drive, maybe longer.Don't know whether or not I want to rent a hotel room if it's more than a 3 hr drive.
