I'm so happy to have found this place!!
Just two days ago I learned about the Melungeons, then when I learned there was a Blackfoot connection all the lights went on!!
Finally, an explanation why the kids at school used to ask, "What nationality are you?" I used to tell them I "had some Indian" in me, and that Dad said it was Blackfoot......but then, of course, they all asked if we were from out West.
Eventually, I decided Dad must have been wrong. For the past 4-5 years I've been working on our family tree and have remained stumped as to why we are so very brown.
I finally decided that we must have a background of lots of multi-racial ancestors intermarrying, but had no clue how to discover what or who those people might be.
I have lots and lots of Campbell's in my line(s), they all seemed to have moved from north west NC (Ashe County) to eastern KY (Clay, Leslie & Perry County) sometime between 1775 and 1810.
We grew up believing we had Blackfoot indian ancestors. We tan so well that in the early 60's we were nearly thrown out of a "white" restaurant in Florida.
This explains so very many things about my family.
I'm hoping to learn a lot here..... http://winwinworld.net/SaponiForum/UBB/smile.gif

Welcome Patty, what other names do you have, especially of female ancestors, since those names are so readily overlooked?

Linda, thank you for the nice welcome! http://winwinworld.net/SaponiForum/UBB/smile.gif
Both of my Grandmothers were Campbells, as well as my paternal G-Grandmother. All 3 Campbell lines eventually go back to a John Campbell born in Ashe County, NC in 1763. I have other Campbell's married in here and there as well. My family tree is more like a wild grapevine.
Other names of my female ancestors are:
Hubbard
Hensley
Hollandsworth/Hollingsworth
Boone
Hignite
Colwell
Cowan
Gross
Baker
McIntosh
Hoskins
Morris
Stidham
Lewis
Ramsey
Murray
Ponder
Also James in NC in the mid 1700's and Couch in NC in 1772.
Following some of my "male lines" I have:
Ball in VA from 1720-1839, then NC, then KY.
Hubbard in VA at least by 1774, then in NC by 1804, then KY, then IN.
Hollandsworths/Hollingsworths in MD in 1680-1740, then NC, then KY.
Campbell in NC in 1763, then KY by 1825.

On the Southeastern American Indian Family Surnames list:
the name Hubbard is associated with Creek families
Boon/Boone - Creek, Meherrin
I wonder if Cowan might not be a variant of Goin, which is a prominent name among Saponi descended families.
Baker's on the list, no tribe specified.
Same for Morris
Lewis - Meherrin, Gingaskin
This list does not cover SE derived Indians who moved into Appalachia all that well. Hope this helps.

Another thought. At the time when what I believe were the Eastern Blackfoot (Sissipaha) were at Fort Christanna the Meherrin were living nearby. The Meherrin river cuts through that old reservation, actually.

Mecou and welcome Patty to our site. Another of your family names that's a dead giveaway is Ramsey. That is a name that is listed on Plecker's list. Strong DNA lineage. They seemed to have kept the "Caucasian" genes at bay http://winwinworld.net/SaponiForum/UBB/smile.gif
Ramsey is a strong line out of the north central piedmont area of VA. Alot of your relatives (more than likely unknown to you yet) are still there.
Look forward to working with you.

Dennis,
Yes! We are related! http://winwinworld.net/SaponiForum/UBB/smile.gif
Your Charles Campbell had a brother named Patrick Campbell Jr. That is the line I am descended from. (if everything eventually checks out on paper) http://winwinworld.net/SaponiForum/UBB/wink.gif
Going back that far, I don't have any more info than you do. I suspect that a lot of my "Indian-ness" comes from one of my ancestors named Mary Polly Boone. She is said to have been an Indian 1/2 sister to Daniel Boone, although so far there is no "proof" of this.
Her daughter married a Campbell, and I can trace my lineage back many generations to four of her children.
Got a big dose of those genes! http://winwinworld.net/SaponiForum/UBB/smile.gif I don't have much time to work on genealogy, but I'll be sure and to share anything I come up with on our Campbells.
Yes, I've grown an organic garden for many years now. I'm thinking it's time to work a little permaculture into the yard though. This year it was so dry here my garden was a big flop and I need to garden closer to home so I can take better care of it.
I've been "working on" a raw diet for almost a year now in order to improve my health. It truly has done wonders to help me with my thyroid. I'm hoping to eventually get myself completely off meds.

Hello Dennis, this is Caryn from the Tuckahoe list! hahaha... I'm familiar with the "Hillbilly Tribe", as it constitutes almost my entire family... hahaha j/k
I'm wicked.
I love my hillbilly relatives quite a lot, actually... I, like some or all of you, have unconfirmed Native American ancestry-- or somethin' along those lines... My (Flowers) family originated (as far back as we are able to trace) in Buckingham County, Virginia-- "The Three Brothers" as my family likes to call them: Roland, Anthony, and Benjamin moved to around what's Pickett County, Tennessee in the first few years of the 19th century. Last names in my tree: Flowers, Mullins (pictures of these people, I swear, makes me believe they were Melungeons-- but I can't tie them to the Scott County Melungeons in any way), Story/Storie, Brock, Zachary, Walker.... Just checkin' out what's going on here. I'm quite impressed. Thanks for directing me here, Dennis!
