View Full Version : HELP - searching for ancestors
I'm a new member; enjoyed browsing your site tonight. I am new to research but had been told all my life that my father's family had Indian blood, maybe dating to a Powhatan confederacy tribe. Surnames on his side are Harper (his mother), Newton, Thomas, Kenyon, Allerton, Stull. Most of these would have been in eastern VA, Stafford Co or Westmoreland Co., Alexandria, or St Mary's Co MD. I know there is some Indian blood through my gggrandfather's FIRST wife, Newton, but what makes matters more complicated is that his mother was also a Newton. His second wife was a Parrott. Her mother was an Edmonds and her mother a Fitzhugh. I didn't see any of these names in the other posts, except one reference to surname Thomas. Any ideas where I should try next? My Dad died in 2000 with Alzheimers and the only other family in his generation denies any knowledge of the connection. Thanks for listening. ET

Welcome Eve, and good luck in your research. From the list I have of SE Indian Family Surnames, Thomas is listed as associated with Tuscarora families. Harper is known in some native families, tribe unspecified. Don't see any of the others, but this list is by no means definitive. Plus I'm not as familiar with Powahatan names. Maybe somebody else will respond with more info.

Eve--My name is Lee Bruce and my grandmother was an Edmonds from northern VA. Fitzhugh is also a family name on the same side of my family. I am very interested in talking with you!

clen99: I just re-registered; something happened with my first registration and I couldn't post. I am very interested in corresponding with you. I grew up in Oakton, VA; my father's family lived in Warrenton. I have some info about "the begats" pertaining to these names. We can chat here or you can email me directly if you like at

I look forward to hearing back from you. I AM SO EXCITED TO SHARE INFO! :-) Eve
