Hi,
Does anyone know how to go about finding information about family members who don't have birth certificates, short of a note from a midwife. My grandfather, Roosevelt Steele, Cherokee, lived in NC with his mother. They moved around a lot but had two events in their lives that may have been documented but I have no idea where to find the information. I have dates and ages of my great-grandmother/father when they were married and when my grandfather was born. My great-grandfather burned down the house he was staying at and remembers the doctor talking the fire out of him. A woman called M'dear helped him. My great grandmother, Sally Fodrell Steele was found with her throat cut. When she was able to travel, she moved from Baltimore,Philly, and New York. My grandfather served in WWII in France and Germany went though basic training in Louisiana. His commanding officer was Indian from Louisiana. He won the golden gloves amateur boxing in NY.Before moving to Cartersville, VA, with his wife Mary Ellen Stovall. He has a son in the Brooklyn area he was still trying to locate before he passed away. We're still looking. I have no idea where to find this information on paper. Any information/help/advice greatly appreciated.

That's quite a colorful family you have. Have you tried looking up service records? I heard some were lost in a fire/flood or something, water damaged. I was going to check on my uncle at one point, but didn't follow threw. I just surfed around the 'net for a little while and I found the info on where to write for information. The rest, sorry, I don't know anything about. Hope someone else here has some advice.
