Help, Help, I am trying to do research on my great-great grandmother, and have not been able to get any farther. Here's the info.

My great great Grandmother was born in 1845 North Carolina. Probably born around Bertie county, N.C., because she was raised in the area. (I have a letter from her friends that stated they knew her for over 40yrs. Also, my attempts at finding the descendants of her friends has failed.)

I can't find her name in the census for 1850, 1860, 1870. My grandmother didn't leave the name of her father or mother. Her maiden name was Winburn and she told my great grandmother our tribe was Blackfoot.

My great grandmother told this to my mother and before my mother could ask more questions my great grandmother died. I believe she was a saponi. Does anyone have any idea were I could continue to search?

I have drilled and drilled my relatives and they don't have any information. "That (family)kind of talk was not ment for the ears of children."

Any sugguestions would be highly appreciated.

Thank you,

Brownbird

Thank you for posting this information. All the Eastern Siouan tribes (called Saponi at that point) are documented as living in Bertie County for about a decade (ca. 1710). I've also heard of other families believed Saponi at later dates in that area (Indian Woods).

Also the name Winbon/Winbourn/Winburn is found among some Meherrin and Saponi families. I think you should be very encouraged that you gr-gr grandmother knew what she was talking about.
