I have learned from some family members, Boyds' that we are of the Blackfoot Tribe. onm my father's side of the family. I don't know any more than that, at this time, as we have just recently met them after a very long search in Gates, NC. Anyone familiar or related to the BOYDS. Glad for all of the information on this Saponitown site~~Sophronia

Hi Sophronia,
I moved your post over to the genealogy section.
There are several here with BOYDs from a couple counties west of Gates.
If you haven't used the 'search' button yet for Boyd, please try that.
If you don't find any directs, get back to me with some of your people's names who lived prior to 1930.

All,
I recently talked to my son-in-law's father whose family is from Southwest Virginia (as mine is). His grandmother was a Callahan who married a Roberts. He didn't have dates and counties. But with no prompting on my part, he mentioned the Blackfeet ID through the Callahan side of his family. Another small piece of our Blacckfeet puzzle. He's promised to get more specific info for me from his family.

Bill Hi Bill, I got your message and thanks. Some of my family that I recently met from Gates and there-a-bouts are the Boyds prior to 1930 are John Boyd, his wife Sophronia, a son Samuel (my Dad) whose wife (my Mom) was Mary Cannon another son, William, a daughter, Lucretia and I believe A daughter, Judy. I don't know any more than that except they are of Blackfoot heritage. Thanks, Sophronia

There are some Roberts connected with the Riddles.

From what I have heard recently, these Roberts were Cherokee.

Sophronia,
I didn't find them on the 1920 census, which would have been nice in order to tie this down better.

(EDIT: but now I have so I'll work on this)

1920 Gates Co., NC Census; ED35 Haslett Twp; 17-19 January; Sheet 2A:
Household 18:
HAYSLETT, John F.; House Carpenter; Mu, 50, NC, NC, NC. (John Fletcher Hayslett)
............., Julia; wife; Mu 40, NC, NC, NC.
BOYTT, Mary C.; Sister-in-law; Mu, 25, Va, Va, Va.
........., Pearl; neice, Mu, 10, Va, Va, Va.
........., Louanne; neice, Mu, 5, Va, Va, Va.
........., St. John; nephew, Mu, 4 yrs 6 months, Va, Va, Va.
........., Annie M.; neice, Mu, 1 yr 10 months, Va, Va, Va.
........., Sarah; Cousin, Mu, 7, Va, Va, Va.

I'm probably going to have to do more work to see if this proves-out, but this is who I think they may be:

1910 Mecklenburg Co., Va Census; ED61 LaCross; 16 April; Sheet 2A & 2B; Household 25:
BOYD, John Sr; Farmer, Mu, 63, m'd 1x, m'd 35 yrs; Va, Va, Va.
......., Sophronia; wife, Mu, 62, m'd 1x, m'd 35 yrs; Va, Va, Va.
......., William R.; son, Mu, 24, m'd 1x, m'd 0 yrs; Va, Va, Va.
......., Mary; dau-in-law, Mu, 18, m'd1x, m'd0yrs; 1/1; NC, NC, NC.(Wm's wife
......., Mack; son, Mu, 22, Va, Va, Va.
......., Paul; son, Mu, 20, Va, Va, Va.
......., SAMUEL; son, Mu, 18, m'd1x, m'd 0 yrs; Va, Va, Va.
......., MARY; dau-in-law, Mu, 18, m'd1x, m'd 0 yrs; 0/0; Va, Va, Va.
......., -not named-; Granddau; Mu, 2 months old; Va, Va, Va.

The unnamed Granddau must be Wm and Mary's "1/1" (which means she has had 1 child and 1 child is living) since Samuel and Mary are listed as having no children "0/0".

1900 Mecklenburg Co., Va Census; ED56 South Hill Dist; 12 June; Sheet 7A; Household 94:
BOYD, John; farmer, Aug 1845, 54, m'd 30 yrs; Va, Va, Va.
......., Sefrony; wife; Aug 1848, 51, m'd 30 yrs; 10/8; Va, Va, Va.
......., Fannie; dau; Aug 1870, 29, Va.
......., Lu; dau; Mar 1878, 22, Va.
......., Johnie; son; Mar 1881; 19, Va.
......., William; son; Feb 1884, 16, Va.
......., Mack; son, June 1886, 13, Va. (Double census entry - proves the point, see note)
......., Paul; son, June 1888, 11, Va.
......., SAM; son, Apr 1891, 9, Va*******
READ, Sefrony; Granddau; Jul 1897, 2, Va (surname may be RUDD?)
......., Pearl; Granddau; Sept 1899, 9 months old, Va.

Note: Mack Boyd appears on the above 1900 Mecklenburg Co., Va Census dated 12 June.
A week later on 19 June, he apparently is visiting his older sister Julia Hayslett in Gates Co., NC:
1900 Gates Co., NC Census; ED43 Haslett Twp; 19 June; Sheet 10B; Household 165:
Haslett, Fletcher; farmer, Dec 1870, 29, m'd 5 yrs; NC, NC, NC
........., Julia; wife, Oct 1874, 25, m'd 5; Va, Va, Va.
BOYD, Mack; Bro-in-Law; June 1887, 12; Va, Va, Va.

I think this is your Mary Cannon's family, and if so, you are Felicia Cegelski's cousin:

1900 Mecklenburg Co., Va Census; ED56 South Hill; 7 June; Sheet 4B; Household 50:
CANNON, Walter; farmer, July 1854, 45, m'd 10 yrs, Va, Va, Va.
..........., Sophie; wife; Sept 1869, 30, m'd 10 yrs, 7/7, Va, Va, Va.
..........., Wesley; son, Feb 1880, 20, Va.
..........., Joseph; son, Jan 1882, 18, Va.
..........., Ann; dau, May 1884, 16, Va.
..........., Captain C.; son, Jan 1890, 10, Va.
..........., Cornel; son, May 1892, 8, Va ("Colonel")
..........., MARY; dau, Jan 1894, 6, Va*******
..........., Martha; dau, Jan 1894, 6, Va
..........., Jesse James; son, Nov 1897, 2, Va.
..........., John Daniel; son, Nov 1899, 6 months old, Va.

1880 Brunswick Co., Va Census; ED30 Meherrin District; 29, 30 June; p.54B; Household 544:
BOYD, John; Mu, 35, m'd, farmer, Va, Va, Va.
......., Sophronia; Mu, 34, m'd, wife, Va, Va, Va.
......., Isaiah; 10, son, attends School, Va.
......., Fannie; 8, dau, Va.
......., Judah; 8, dau, Va. (Julie)
......., Louisa; 4, dau, Va.
......., John; 1, son, Va.
