Hello all,

A couple of weeks ago, I started looking into the family of an elderly friend. He was born in OH, but he said that his father was from Kentucky. He also said that his paternal grandmother was "full-blooded Cherokee". I haven't found the Cherokee line(s) yet, but I thought that some on the list would be interested in what I have found. I do have a little more information on these people but not much. No Cherokee, but I was wondering about Blackfoot. Here's what I have so far. My friend's name is Fred. Sorry about such a long post, but I didn't want to leave anything out. Okay, so I'll have to do this in 2 posts.

Generation No. 1

1. Otis Orem Johnston, born 18 Dec 1893 in Kentucky; died 21 Jan 1969 in Galion Community Hospital, Galion, Crawford Co, OH. He was the son of 2. John Whitfield Johnston and 3. Patience Johnson. He married (1) Othora Elizabeth Scarborough Abt. 1923 in Ohio. She was born 24 Feb 1900 in Ohio, and died 20 Jul 1974 in Galion Community Hospital, Galion, Crawford Co, OH. She was the daughter of Alfred James Scarbrough and Dora Sybil Appleman.

Notes for Otis Orem Johnston:
On the 1930 census for Galion, Crawford Co, OH, "Ottis Johnson" (sic) age 37 is listed as the head of household. Also in the household are wife Othora Johnson (30), son Fredrick (5), daughter Francis, step-daughters Esther (12) and Katheryn (9) Hager, and widowed mother-in-law Dora Scarborough (68). According to the census taker, all were born in Ohio. Under trade or type of work, Otis' is doing labor at what looks like "Iron works".

Generation No. 2

2. John Whitfield Johnston, born 24 Sep 1866 in Kentucky. He was the son of 4. Francis H Johnson and 5. Sophronia Allen. He married 3. Patience Johnson 08 Apr 1891 in Logan Co, KY.
3. Patience Johnson, born 13 Mar 1867 in Kentucky. She was the daughter of 6. John C Johnson and 7. Nancy Chappell.

Notes for John Whitfield Johnston:
In 1900, John W. and Patience N.A. Johnston are shown on the census for the community of Paradise, Muhlenberg Co, KY. Greenville is the county seat. Everyone in the family is said to have been born in Kentucky, but John W says that his mother was born in Tennessee. Patience states that she has given birth to 5 children--3 of whom are still living. Sherman P Johnston, born in June of 1892, is also listed as a son. He doesn't appear on any of the subsequent census reports. Also listed are children with names that are difficult to read. One looks like Oree M who is clearly Otis. The other is a 9 month old daughter named Emmy V.F. Johnston. Probably she is the daughter listed as Vandola and Emma on later reports.

On the Kentucky 1910 Miracode Index Record for Muhlenberg Co, KY, the head of household is listed as John W Johnston.

Found on the 1920 census living in West Court House, Muhlenberg Co, Kentucky. The household includes John W. Johnson, Nancy A. Johnson, Otis (26), Vandola (20), Edwin L (18), Bishop (16) , and Mona (13). John W gave his occupation as farmer.

Notes for Francis H Johnson:
Census records for Francis H. and his wife Sophronia or Safronia show the surname Johnson, however the marriage record gave the names F.H. Johnston and S.M. Allen.

Ages of the children listed are based upon the census estimates. The only date given here is the date of birth of the daughter listed as Birdie. Since she was born within the 12 months previous to the interview, her age is given in months.

Francis H. says that while he was born in Kentucky both of his parents were born in North Carolina. His wife stated that she was born in Tennessee as was her mother. Saphronia's father was born in Virginia. All of Francis' and Sophronia's children were born in Kentucky.

This is a stretch, but there was a Moses and Sarah (Sary) Johnson that lived around Hancock County, TN that are said to have been connected with the Melungeons. Have you doned a search here for the name Johnson.

Moses and Sarah (Sary) had a daughter Sarah who married John Riddle, which is where my side comes in.

Storyteller,
I haven't gotten back to you on this because I wasn't sure if I can add anything helpful. Sophronia was born in Smith Co Tn. and I do have Allen associations there.
James T Allen had children in Smith co Tn. He was the son of William and Sarah Yancey Allen. William was the son of William and Sarah Howard allen. William the son of William hunt Allen and Frances Grant Allen and this William the son of Robert Allen and Elizabeth Walker Allen. That's just a William after a William after a William isn't it?
I don't have all of the siblings and children of siblings on all of these families.
But I also at one time found people in Muhlenburg co Ky and now I can't place where I wrote it down. That's not too helpful is it!
These families were large. One of the William Allen's had about 21 children by three wives. I have lots of holes. Oh The William son of Robert is brother to my Joseph.

I found a tree for these people and have been able to support much of it with census and marriage records. The exact dates came from the tree.

William Booker Allen (I'll add his line later)
b. 26 Dec 1814 Shenandoah, Page Co., Va
d. 22 Dec 1900 Greenville, Muhlenberg Co., Ky
m'd 15 April 1841 (his 2nd)
Candice Anne Kitchens
b. 24 Nov 1824 Smith Co., Tenn
d. 6 Aug 1898 Greenville, Muhlenberg Co., Ky

their daughter
Sophronie Margaret Allen
b. 11 Dec 1844 Smith Co., Tenn
m'd 22 Nov 1864 Muhlenberg Co., Ky
Francis Henry Johnson
b. 18 Nov 1835 Muhlenberg Co., Ky
d. 23 Jul 1919 Muhlenberg Co., Ky

Francis Henry Johnson's parents:
John Johnson, b. 1798 Nash Co., NC; d. 9 Oct 1872 Muhlenberg Co., Ky
and m'd 9 Dec 1824 in Muhlenberg Co., Ky,
Elizabeth Wells, b. abt 1807 NC; d. 1857 Muhlenberg Co., Ky
(purported dau of Wyatt Wells, b.abt. 1785 NC; d.abt. 1850 Muhlenberg Co., Ky; and Nancy Ganes, b.abt. 1785 NC, d. abt. 1850 (?) Muhlenberg Ky.
Wyatt Wells's purported parents:
Francis Wells, b. 8 May 1733 Ann Arundel, Md; d. 8 Aug 1812 Muhlenberg Ky; and Ana _?_, no dates)

John Johnson's parents:
Jacob Johnston/Johnson, b.abt. 1770 NC; d.abt. 1845 Muhlenberg Co., Ky; m'd 6 Sept 1796 Franklin Co., NC Elizabeth "Lizzie" Wells, b.abt. 1783 NC (possibly Franklin Co., NC) - the tree lists her as d. 1850 Haywood Co., Tenn but she is on the 1850 Muhlenberg Co., Ky census living with her son Alfred.
This is obviously a different Elizabeth Wells than the one b.1807, but they may be from the same line.
All of the above appear on various Muhlenberg Co., Ky census records, ofter as near neighbors.

Jacob Johnston's father is purported to be Josiah Johnston, b.abt. 1750/55 NC, d. abt. 1831 Muhlenberg Co., Ky, but I did not find Josiah anywhere.

Candice Anne Kitchens's parents are purported to be:
James Kitchens, b.abt. 1777 Northampton Co., NC, d. 1850 Smith Co., Tenn, and Candice N. _?_, b.abt. 1788, d. 1870 Greenville Muhlenberg Co., Ky.

I couldn't support the following although it may be real:
James's parents purported to be:
James Kitching, b.abt. 1744 Southampton Co., Va, d. 1818 Brush Creek, Smith Co., Tenn; m'd abt. 1777/8 Mourning _?_, no dates.
and
James, b.1744, is purported son of:
James Kitching, b.abt. 1715 Va, d. 17 Jan 1762 Southampton Co., Va; m'd 3 times: Anna Lee; Elizabeth _?_, b.abt. 1718 Va; Martha _?_, m'd in Isle of Wight Co., Va.

Purported parents of William Booker Allen, b.1814 Shenandoah (now Page) Co., Va - didn't find them together so the following is purported only:

m'd 10 Dec 1808 Shenandoah Co., Va
Sarah Booker (earlier Bucher), b.abt. 1793 Shenandoah Co., Va

m'd 25 Jan 1790 Shen. Co., Va
Mary Lawrence, b.abt. 1770 Fauquier Co., Va, d. Nov 1802 Shen. Co., Va)

Archilbald's parents
Moses Allen, b. 2 Nov 1754 Fauquier Co., Va, d. 22 Aug 1863 Wilson Co., Tenn (didn't find on 1850 or 1860 Wilson, Tn census); m'd 13 Feb 1783 Shenandoah Co., Va Martha Atwood, b.abt. 1757 Shenandoah Co., Va, d. 14 Dec 1837 Wilson Co., Tenn (dau of Gilbert Atwood b. 1730 Westmoreland Co., Va, d. 181 Shenandoah Co., Va (son of John, s/o Gilbert); m'd abt 1752 Nancy Ann Young, b. 1735 Westmoreland Co, Va, d. __ Warren Co., Va.

Moses's line purports to be:
Moses/Archibald, b.1721 Pr. Wm, Va/ Archibald, b.1697 Kg. Geo., Va/ Archibald, b.unknown, but it doesn't look like anyone's put too much work into this.

Bill,

Thanks so much! You ARE a genius (and a doll besides)! There is so much information here! It'll take me a while to go through it. My head is spinning. Did you notice in my post that had the will of James Kitchings, that he had a daughter named Candace and a daughter named Sophonia who both married men with the name Allen. Candace then named 2 of her daughters Candice and Sophronia. I don't know who Sophronia married--possibly the Moses Allen that is mentioned at the bottom of the will.

Saj,

I THOUGHT that I had seen you post about the surname Allen and thought that this was another connection that we had albeit vicariously. I came across the will of William Booker Allen online the other night. I actually thought that some of it was amusing. Three of W.B. Allen's daughters married men by the name of Johnston. This is so confusing!!

The will of W. B. Allen

in the name of God, amen. I, W. B. Allen have this day concluded to make the following distribution of my personal and real estate. First, to my daughter of Elizabeth I give nothing. To, to my son John i give $5. 3, to my daughter Mary Mathilde I give nothing. 4, to my daughter Mary Melende's son, Jessa Parham I give one equal portion of my estate.
Five. To my son and James A.. Allen I give nothing.
Six. To my daughter Sarah F. Allen ' s to design Lesley and Willis Allen I give one equal portion of my estate.
Seven. To my daughter Siphronia M. Johnston I give one equal portion of my estate.
Eight. To my daughter Candace A. Johnston I give nothing.
Nine. To my daughter Nancy A.. Johnston ' s children I give one equal portion of my estate
10. To my son Thomas P. Allen I give nothing.
11. To my son Joshua Allen I give one equal portion of my state taking into consideration $17 which he Joshua of me.
12. To my daughter Pauline C. Mansfield ' s son Green Mansfield I give one equal portion of my estate.
13. To my son Charles H.. Allen I give nothing.
14. To my son Wiatt Allen I give one equal portion of my estate
15. To my daughter Susan E.. Ford I give one equal portion of my estate
16. PAP to my daughter Lucy W Metzker I give nothing.
17. To my daughter Tampa C. Cary I give one equal portion of my estate.
18. To my daughter Florence L.. Walker I give one equal portion of my estate.
19. To my son of Robert G. Allen I give one equal portion of my state over and above, being well paid for taking care of me for the balance of my life. I hereby appoint T. H. Johnston and Robert G.. Allen as my executors' to carry out this will according to the law and equity, First paying all my just debt. In testimony where of I here unto to subscribe to this March 9, 1899. W. B. Allen, his x mark. Attest, J.R. Wells, R. L. Wells

State of Kentucky, Muhlenberg County Court, Section. March. 25th regular term 1901. The foregoing last will and testament of W. B. Allen this season was at a former term of this court, produced and proven to be the act and deed of said decedent by the oath of John R.. Wells one of the subscribing witnesses there too, and at the aforesaid former term of said court, C. H. Allen appeared and accepted to the provisions of said will and the court ordered that said case be continued for hearing of exceptions, and at the March regular term of said court this said Will was again produced in the court and said heirs C. H. Allen and others withdrew their objections and constituted that said will be probated and recorded. I just noticed this. Seeing how the Johnstons/Johnsons and Allens were marrying each other, what are the chances that the two Wells mentioned here were also cousins of either or both families?

Wm Booker Allen's daughters:

Sophronia Margaret Allen, as noted above, m'd 1864 Francis Henry Johnson b. 1835 Ky, son of John Johnson, b. 1798 NC, and Elizabeth Wells, b.1807 NC,
Sophronia and the Candice listed below were sisters and they marr'd brothers.

Candice Ann Allen, b. 31 Dec 1847 Muhlenberg Co., Ky, m'd 18 Oct 1868 in Muhlenberg Co., John H. Johnson, b.abt. 1831 Muhlenberg Co., Ky, son of John Johnson, b. 1798 NC, and Elizabeth Wells, b.abt. 1807 NC.

Nancy America Allen, b. 13 Oct 1849 Muhlenberg co., Ky, m'd 8 Dec 1868 Muhlenberg Co., Ky, Winfield Scott Johnson, b.abt. 1850 Letcher Co., Ky; son of William Johnston, b. 1814 Ky, and Adeline Hurst, b. 1821 Ky - don't see on a 'quick look' that these lines are closely related to the above listed Johnson/Johnston lines - but one can't be TOO sure 'til you work them out.

The Moses Allen in the Will may be Moses b.abt. 1811, who may be the one who had a wife Fanny (Frances) Johnson, from the earlier generation - both of which may be cousin lines to these direct lines since both lines had numerous Moses and Fannie's and both were in the same area of Tenn.

Bill,

I don't know how you do it! I can find things out that I think are remarkable, but then I get "side-tracked" and confused between the different lines and with new hypotheses. But you keep them straight and don't seem to get confused between the lines and names. Unbelievable!

Hi Bill. It's been along time since I got on the Fforum. In looking through some of your posts, I saw one with the name Sophronia, spelld exactly like mine and read it but I don't hink it is my Sophronia, as they are from TN. I never heard of any of the Boyds being there. I am still searching for Sophronia (Boyd) I don't have a maiden name for her. I believe her husband was John Boyd of Gates, NC. They had several children,My father, Samuel, was one of them as was, Paul Mark, Judy(Julie, Julia). William ,and I don't know the names of others if there were any. Can you help me in my search with the new information I have given you? Tthanks Bill for your didication to all of us on the Forum. Sophronia
