Linda...everybody: I was so excited when I read this. I have a deed here where my Meredith Collins owned a strip of land 10 miles wide and 30 miles long along John's Creek. His farm was on Shelby -Craney Creek not far away and his son William owned and operated a gristmill on the Tug Fork of Big Sandy. The deed is in old English writting and very hard to read. It was sold to a Harrison Newsome.(John's Creek land)
1699 - The site of three Totero Indian villages, the tribe had a village at
Hager Hill, one at Cliff and one on Johns Creek near modern-day McCombs,
Kentucky. When the pioneers settled on Johns Creek around 1800, they found
some old mud lodges of the Totero still standing. The word “Totery” signifies “river
of sandbars”. The Totery River is the Big Sandy River.

Good article, rlee, I just started it, looks good.
Brenda, where did you find this deed? So you've found Meredith on the Big Sandy? When? How long is John's Creek? How close does this put the Collins to the old Totero village? How removed in time?

Does anyone know what happened to this web site? The domain name listed expired in 2003.

I don't think he had an internet connection after that time.
He was working on another book then and I think he's working on another one now.
