View Full Version : Tribal symbols
I found the following article quite interesting and hope to expand on this article.
I do know that I have read of this symbol ( black snake) being used amongst the Occaneechi people during the 1700's.

aswell there are links to other web pages here. some very revealing materials.
In the text there is reference to a painting re. the black snake tattoo, it's there but barley visable.

Hi Tom, that was really an interesting article, but did I miss something? They talked about the snake pots..but they didn't show one. At least I didn't see one with snakes on it. Or did I totally miss the point??
If you look around those sites you'll see large caly pots with snakesaround them,.

I thought I would bring this post back...because this is the first thing that came to mind, when we met our black friend at Ft. Christanna.

Wow...just...wow.
This is profoundly cool and interesting. So much to look into here. I don't think I'll have time until the snow is on the ground to do research to learn and study on this.
Shirley,
If and when you have the time I, for one, would love so much to hear of your adventures and impressions. I feel I learn so much from everyone's personal family searches and adventures. You saw a black snake at Ft. Christianna? Is this an actual picture you snapped or one from the internet?
Here's to the snow.:)

Wachinika,
Good to hear from you! This is actually the fellow...he did not seem bothered by us at all...so I got a few photos of him. I am still in the process of grasping all that happened on this trip...it is one I will not soon forget...there are so many things, tangible, like meeting some wonderful people from the forum, family (I met my brother for the first time, he is 35 and my G-aunt Wave) and many intangible like the feeling of dancing in the circle, walking the ground of my ancestors. I cannot tell you what peace this has brought me as I always felt like I have been fighting for something...no longer, I am at peace.
Blessings,
Shirley

Wow again.
About what was the length & diameter of the snake? It and the replications of the snake on the pottery all seem to have such a wavey, curly pattern to their movement. Are you really sure it's a he?
Do you and your brother share both parents? I have great tears of joy for you. :) :o :)

I truly do not know how distinguish snake male/female characteristics...just seemed to be a "he" to me. I would say he was about 4 ft long and about 2" in the largest area of the body. Here is another angle:
My brother and I share the same father...thank you.:)

Well sounds like you had a "most exalant adventure" Shirley., your long black friend looks pretty neat too, interesting he's not afraid of anyone.!
I have seen this same fellow on other sites or another that has a very striking family resemblence, and they were not afraid of anyone either.!

It was wonderful Tom and this gentleman was very beautiful...if snakes can be deemed so. Your post came to my mind immediately when I saw him and that he didn't seem bothered by my husband and I or the kids running around...as they have an unlimited supply of energy.:)
