Hello All,

I hope everyone is enjoying his/her summer thus far. I have a question for you all and I would appreciate your comments.

Why is it that some Native Americans have naturally wavy, curly or tight-curly/kinky hair?

first of all it is a steriotype that all indians have long black hair, many of your western tribes have either staight or wavy hair.and have stronger indian blood.this coast on the other hand was hit with french, wavy haired irish, asian spanish, italian explorers and traders not to mentoin african slaves who mixed with southren tribes.highwayboss@comcast.net

Erica,
I have wondered that myself. From my own genealogy research, I am predominantly English, Scottish, Irish, German, Welsh, Black and "white" Dutch, along with my Blackfoot and Cherokee roots, and a few other things. I have the caucasian coloring (reddish brown hair, blue eyes), but my hair in the summer is very frizzy and fly-away, and very curly after it is washed - and I can make my ponytail look like it has "curly dredlocks" when I want to. And I tan pretty easily, especially after getting sunburned.

But in the winter, my hair is almost straight and behaves the way it should, and with each winter, my hair gets straighter and lays better. Go figure.

I have people coming up to me asking if I am mixed.

I want to thank those who have responded thus far. I know that my curly/wavy and sometimes kinky hair comes from my beautiful ancestors from the continent of Africa ;)

I chuckle when Ken's mom refers to their hair as "Cuban" hair. The triracial nature of the area where they lived and grew up....we know different. Ken has the curly hair that you have to work on to keep it from frizzing in the summer, too. And mine used to be blonde and pretty straight, but, as I got older it got darker (well, greyer now) and has more natural curl than it ever had before. You have to understand we are all different mixtures of different backgrounds....and appreciate each part of yourself.

I agree with the information about the European and others influencing the texture and color of our hair and also other traits from our ancestors.
