Hi,

I’ve been “lurking” for the past few days. Today, I’ve tried twice to post and couldn’t get it done in time before “timing out” so I’m going to try to make this a quick one.

Let me first say that I’m researching my maternal grandmother’s family. She passed away almost 40 yrs ago. In trying to assemble as many “facts” as possible about her family, we’ve come to the conclusion that we didn’t “know” her very well and we knew less about her family. She didn’t talk about them. The only thing that keeps coming up is that she was NOT Indian! This was repeated by her younger brother (also now deceased). He thought that maybe the family was Scotch-Irish, maybe English, but they were NOT Indians! This would maybe have been credible had they not had NA features! Although her brother had pale blue eyes and she had green, they were set against faces that were a medium to dark olive, with high cheekbones, and the “Asian folds” on the lids.

My grandmother and her five brothers were born in Angelina Co, TX. Both her mother and father were born in East TX. However, I have been “chasing” their ancestors from all over the Eastern U.S. to TX. Most, however, started in VA and “ran” from there. I’ve got ancestors that were born, married, had children, or died in MD, PA, IN, KY, TN, VA, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, AR, and then into Texas. And they moved in groups of two or three generations along with the in-laws to make sure that they had a ready supply of spouses for their young people along the way.

Some of the surnames in my grandmother’s lines:

Paternal: BEARD, BERRY, COLLINS, DANIELS, HANCOCK, HAY, HAYNES, HORN, HURT, PHELPS, TRAYLOR

Maternal: GATES, HANKS, HYDE, KALDENBACH, KOUNTZ, RATCLIFF, STEWART, YOUNG (JUNG)

Hello Quest for Facts,

This is a brief showing of where these people are from and how they tie in to me. I have more information on some siblings and their spouses, but it would be a huge posting! Also, in the past day or so, I've been searching around and am not too sure on the earlier generations of a couple of them, so I didn't include much on that.

I don't have this family in my line but I am a member of a family site that posted a photo of Isaac Hurt with family. They look extremely ethnic! By no means do they look white. On the comment part she said it was a tin photo so it is dark. Even with that being said their facial charactoristics is not white. If you would like to see the photo I can ask to copy it for you. The photo was taken at Mt. Pisgah, Wayne County, Kentucky.

You caught my interest with the Horn family.

I'm way down the line from Lawrence and Peggy Horn Woolery. I have been told that Peggy Horn was from the Manhattan area. We were also told that her family owned a great deal of land. This lawrence Abrahm Woolery was our first Woolery. They came to MO about 1784 +/-.

Welcome, Storyteller, we've got lots of NOT Indians around here and can always find room for a few more. In my own family a few folks whispered that we were Blackfoot, when the NOT Indians weren't in earshot, but in the end they're having their day.

A number of your names are on Richard Haithcock's list of surnames he's found recurring in Virginia/NC families with reports of Indian descent. Most are names associated with families believed to have Saponi ties.

Obviously, there's Collins, which has been written about extensively and is one of the only half dozen names attributed to tribal Saponi.
If Hancock is a variant of Haithcock, that's included. Daniels may be Machapunga, Hay may be Saponi. Try running yours names through the search feature on this site and see who else may have reported on them also.

If you can post any of those photos, I'd love to see them.

Again, welcome.

Personally i think Mary Cave's mother was a Manahoac....</PRE>
</PRE>
The Manahoac are sometimes viewed as a confederacy of tribes, or as a single tribe composed of several subtribes. These include:[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manahoac#cite_note-swanton-1)

The Hassinunga, who were at the headwaters of the Rappahannock River
The Manahoac proper, who, according to Thomas Jefferson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson), were present in Stafford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stafford_County,_Virginia) and Spotsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotsylvania_County,_Virginia) counties
The Ontponea, who were located in Orange County (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_County,_Virginia)
The Shackaconia, who were found in Spotsylvania county on the southern bank of the Rappahannock
The Stegaraki, who were in Orange County along the Rapidan River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapidan_River)
The Tegninateo, who were located in Culpeper County (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culpeper_County,_Virginia) at the head of the Rappahannock
The Whonkentia, who were present in Fauquier County (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fauquier_County,_Virginia) near the head of the RappahannockIn addition to these organizational units, the name of a single village is known. It was called Mahaskahod and was most likely located near modern Fredericksburg.

Amelia County, Virginia (1737), where the "Saponi Indians Cabins" are mentioned in a deed (Holland 1982).

Now here is a combining of pictures I did awhile back.....it is a descendant of Mary Cave.....

I added this photo next to a sketch that was done by john White int he 1580's of the Algonkians on the NC Coast. The lady on the left is part of your ancestor's people. I think it's pretty close resemblence.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c194/Atlanta44/collinsindian.jpg

Now here is a recreationof a monacan woman...a real monacan skull was used to do this recreation. I forget the lady who recreated it but...I think it has a striking resemblence of the above Collins lady also.

Now....the name on your list that is of big interest to me...is the Berry family....

It is also a name of big interest with the Lost colony research groups.

Jeff Beard

My last name is Beard, and I have traced the Beard side back to 1850 in the Gaston Co. N.C. census my ancestor T.J. ( Thomas Jackson ) Beard is living in the household of a woman by the last name of Armstrong.
By 1860 he is not listed in Gaston Co. N.C., but probably moved over into York Co. S.C.
As he marries Emily Massey who is the daughter of John Massey and Citney Berry Massey.
Citney/Sidley Berry was more than likely born in North Eastern N.C. and her family settled in the Lincoln Co. area of N.C.
I believe the Berry family may have been of Indian descent.

I have Hudsons in Maryland 1790. Can't trace them back further. Disparate sides of the family report they were Indian.

Here's a post concerning them:
