I am searching for answers to a brick wall I have hit.
My grandfather was Raymond Norton, b. 1921, OH. His father was Herbert B Norton, b.1889, Vinton co, OH. Herbert was married to Ruth Zinn b. 1990. Ruth told my mother when she was a child that our family had blackfoot blood. Of course I can find no record of this. Until I found this site. Thank you!

Anyway. I have traced the family back to a Seth Norton b. 11-21-1820 NY (Oneida Co.?)
He married 3X. His last wife was Ann Markin. they had 3 children: Perry, Herbert and Seth G. Seth J. died 1894 Vinton Co OH.

In my reasearch I did find a book that listed Saponi - Cayuga Co NY 1800 cesus. I found several Norton names listed, some from Oneida Co. I also found documentation of the Saponies entering Galia Co Ohio in the 1800's.

I think that it is possible that Seth J's father was Ansel Norton b. in Connecticut. Married Lucy Bostwick of Ostego NY. They had 5 children: Emily, Catherine, Seth J., Louisa, and Perry.

If anyone can help in my search and in confirming what my Great Grandmother Ruth told my mother about the blackfoot, I would appreciate your help.

Thanks, Kelly

I understand how difficult it is finding some of your people. My family was in the Gallia Co.area during that period and still are. I have some information from early census etc. We may be related!!

I would be very interested in that book. I've seen some information quoted from it, but I'd love to see for myself and know what to cite in quoting it. I'm also intrigued by the Connecticut connection. I've noticed some people in my family's home town who had a name I suspect was Saponi (in the larger sense) who migrated west from Connecticut.

I think if you can trace your family to that census in New York, you have verified your family's story.
