The pow wow at Occoneechee State Park will be big this year. There are four regocnized Siouan groups, and several non recognized, that will be all contributing to this event. Considering that there's often been some wrangling amongst these groups, it will be interesting to have them all together. If there's a good spirit there, it will be a milestone.
All politics aside, there will be many opportunities for people to come together, and it is very holy ground for us, the last place the Siouan people of the Piedmont held their own power, and lost it with the massacre on Occoneechee Island. The Island's now inundated by Kerr Lake, and lays at the feet of Clarksville, under the bridges that now span the waterway.
Who's coming? Who should I be looking for? Grand entry's at noon. It goes till about six. It's Occoneechee State Park on Hwy 58, just before you get to Clarksville, assuming you're coming from the east. That's also where 15 meets 58 on the east south of the bridges.
Every year I've gone, someone important has comeinto my life, or I've learned something that changes my life.
