Counties that apply are Pittsylvania, Campbell, Halifax and Bedford. Surnames are: Talbott, Farmer, Mayhew that I would say offhand. I have been doing my genealogy for about 10 years. I have heard from plenty of realtives there was "Indian blood" in the family but no one can tell me who or when. My mother is a blue eyed, red head with high cheekbones born in 1921 in Pittsylvania County. She thinks she is a Native American descendant. Her father's side of the family, Irby, many with coal black hair and DARK blue almost black eyes. I can trace to 1650 Charles City, Virginia. The male came from England. The wife, I have no idea. My cousin told me when she went to her uncle, John Talbott's, funeral when she was a girl in the late 50's. He looked just like an Indian laying there. That's exactly what she said to me. Too many people have said too many things about there "being Indians" in the family for me to think it's not true. As the old saying goes where there's smoke, there's fire. http://winwinworld.net/SaponiForum/UBB/smile.gif Alva

Hello AlvaRose, Welcome. What state is that? NC or VA? And what part of the state do those counties fall in?
I agree with you, if there are persistent stories and traits, there's likely something to it. I mean, somebody needs to go figure out the percentages of just how many white women there were here in 1650. It doesn't take a lot of Natives in your family tree to make a whole lot of noise, and if they're trying to tell you something, it's worth the bother to listen.

Would you happen to have any Roses crossing that Talbot line? I have some ancestors of Roses on my father's side that married into the Talbot line around Suffolk, VA. They weren't too far from Brunswick County. Right on the state line.

The state is Virginia. Most of the county's are in the Piedmont area. We don't have any Talbott's that are married to Roses. My first name is Alva and my middle name is Rose. My mother is 81 and she keeps looking to me to solve the "mystery". She thinks for sure there is "indian" blood on both sides of her family. I'm just seeing if I can find anything out regarding native americans in the family. :) :) Alva

Mayho is on the list as a name found in Saponi families. I would imagine that's also a varient of Mayo, also associates with Saponi.
Do you have any old photos?

The furthest back Mayhew that I can find is listed on a Maryland census in 1776. So I don't know about their origin. As far as pictures I have some of Irbys, mother's father's people. For Talbotts (mother's, mother's side) I have none of my great grandmother but I do have some of her sister. Very tall, ramrod straight even once elderly. She is old in these pictures so she is already grey and the pictures are B&W. :) Alva

There was a Blackfoot Town in Maryland between 1840 and 1880s. It's now known as Dasbury, DE, right on the border. I'm inclined to believe that the Blackfoot in question are associated with the Piedmont Siouan. That may be clue. I don't suppose you know where in Maryland your people were. You may also want to check on Fredericks MD. I had family there I believe were Saponi Blackfoot.
What names do you have associated with those Virginia counties you mentioned?

I realy don't know where in MD the Mayhews are from someone had sent me that info. I will have to did it out and take another look.
The surnames are Talbott, Farmer, Mayhew and Irby.
My Mom was born in Hurt, VA in 1921 and grew up in Danville. They are both in Pittsylvania County. Her maiden name was Irby.
Most of her relatives were in Pittsylvania County, VA.

I'll have to make sure Sapon1 takes a look over here. She's from Pittsylvania county and has been studying those records with a fine tooth comb.
