Blackfoot on the MS Gulf Coast

Hi Everyone,
This is my first time here. I am extremely impressed by all the wonderful information that is shared on this forum. I feel like someone has turned on the light. For a minute I thought that I was loosing it and so did my relatives when I repeatedly questioned them about being Blackfoot.
I see most of you talking about VA, PA, and even TN and WV. I am at a brickwall, I can't seem to get off the MS Gulf Coast. I know that my people are not originally from there but they showed up there around 1880. They claim Blackfoot so they could have migrated from elsewhere. My father says GA but he is not sure. Does anyone have any info on bands making it that far south?

I'll drop Scott a note to look at your post. Part of his Saponi family took a southerly route all the way to Texas, so he may be able to help you.

My Blackfoot ancestors ended up in Vernon County, WI, and they had cousins there who married some Chavis's who'd migrated from Robeson County, NC. They spent some time in Georgia first, though, on land that belonged to Cherokee.

There's a gentleman I may see in a few weeks who is Blackfoot whose family is from Alabama. There are also many people in Florida with family reports of being Blackfoot.

The Blackfoot or Saponi along with many other broken bands or tribes ended up in various locations through out the States. A good book to get and read is Brent Kennedy's book The Melungeons. Books on the Lumbee, the Saponi or Southeastern Siouans are also very enlightening. Much of the migrations that occured happened out of a need for survival sake. Following economic trends, racial laws being passed, and so on are reasons for migrations.
