DNA Test Kit

Today we got Becky's National Geographic dna test kit. It had a generic packing slip (as opposed to a genetic slip ;-) On the packing slip is a section on returns. It has a laundry list of reasons that you can check for being dissatisfied with the product. Keep in mind that this list would normally be referring to books and t-shirts and stuff but since this is a dna test kit, the reasons can take on a whole new meaning.
For example, some of the reasons that you may be unhappy with the results of your DNA test are:
1. "too small" ..... maybe you aren't human, maybe you are a sea urchin
2. "too large"..... would this be a problem if your genome is too large? Maybe you are a alien/human hybrid?
3. "damaged in transit" .... aren't we all? Life's tough.
4. "arrived too late"..... I've often wished that I had lived several hundred years ago.
5. "damaged" ..... damn pollution.......
6. "defective"...... well at least now it's documented.
7. "workmanship"....... we got no control over what your mama and daddy gave you....
8. "parts missing" (see above)....unless you are just accident prone.
9. "value not as expected" .... isn't that a subjective quality?
10. "style not as expected".... it's a double helix.... you expected a triple???

Has anyone done these DNA tests? I am considering it, but not sure if I can take it or if my Aunt has to take it.

I would appreciate any feedback on how satisfied/unsatisfied you are with the results of the test.

Also, I'm confused about who can take it. Can anyone take it? or does it have to come through your mother's line if you are a female and father's line if your are male?

I have read some things on the net, but the more I read, the more confused I get. LOL

So if my father's people were the NA's can I still test? or wouldmy bro have to do the test?

Well, it didn't really answer my questions, so I guess I'll go look more on the net.

As a female, there are two tests you can take. One of these is the mtDNA test. It tells you the ethnic group of your straight female line, i.e. mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, gggrandmother, etc. If any of your male ancestors were male, it does not show in that test. My indigneous line comes through my gggrandfather. My mtDNA results were European.

The Y test is a male test. To measure male ancestors using this test, you have to use the results of a brother or male cousin who is a direct male line. The Y-test is father, grandfather, great-grandfather, etc. To determine the straight male line that I thought might have been indigenous, we used my cousin's father who was a straight male descendent. Those results were also European (as kind of expected, since one of the uncles was known to have said he was Irish and Indian. The DNA results were Irish, so now, by reason of elimination, we know it came through the female line.)

On myself, being female, I used the genetree DNA test that measures percentages of indigenous DNA. That test is not supposed to be as reliable as the mtDNA or Y-test. However, my results correlated to my genealogy information. This is the only test I could use to verify indigenous results, as my line is a broken male-female line.

Your situation sounds similar to mine.

At least that would be a start so I'm not chasing a 'non-existant Indian' LOL.But all you have to do is look at my ancestors to know we are. We just have to find out all the who, what, where and when info. :)

Yes, it did confirm it. However, someone on this forum did not get theirs confirmed by that same test. This person had rumors of NA something like 5 generations back. The test results were negative.

Thanks Cindy for clearing that up, it is a confusing process, the femal to male DNA is why I am trying to get my father to take the test, i figure mine would come out probably predom Polish and German via my moms side, but NA DNA will show up for my Daddy. Thanks for helping Dovelady with that, I know when the topic was first presented I was tottally confused as to how it works.

Since you are related to Tom, he and I had already determined that we are likely connected somehow. His folks were in some similar places to mine. There are Hardins in my family tree and living near mine in Iowa. Given that, I would vote on the likelihood of NA in your family.

That's great that we might be related. You and Tom have probably already exchanged info, but can you let me know who your Hardins are? I am currently researching this line and so far, it is pretty skimpy. We only have two, possibly three generations of Hardins (Hardings) if I remember right.

Maybe with your info and ours we can find some more information.
