Greetings,
I am new to this forum. My name is Charles Orear, and I live in Misouri. I was recently told by a gr-uncle of mine that we were Blackfoot and Cherokee. His sister my grandma always told me we were Cherokee.
My grandma's niece also told me about the Blackfoot connection, and stated she heard it directly from from her grandpa. My ancestors lived in eastern KY.(Lawrence CO.)
and most of thier forebears came from Rowan/Surry/Wilkes Co. area of NC. circa 1820-1830. This is the earliest reference point for most of these with a couple of exceptions coming down from Culpepper CO VA in 1778-1780.
The surnames of intrest are, Hammon(d), Hargis (these two are supposed to be from Goochland CO VA), Collier, Cook, and Burton.
There are two other surnames from unknown parts of VA, Stallard, and Gillum. I have great photos of some of my Blackfoot/Cherokee ancestors that I'd like to share if someone can tell me how to attach them. If anyone is researching these surnamesor has info please share either through this forum or e-mail me at ketagustah@hotmail.com.
Thank You
Charles
P.S.
Barry I have a Cherokee(?) ancestor from Scott CO. VA whose paternial grandmother was one Anne Carter married to David Sloas. Anne was a midwife and these people migrated to what is now Elliot CO KY circa 1850. Any connection to your Carters? I believe her to be related to the Carters of Carter's Fort and Indian Trader John Carter from this area who attended the treaty of Sycamore Shoals.

Hi Charles:
Welcome!! Anne Carter does ring a bell but I have a lot of research to do. As we develop our reaseach and bring more Blackfoot/Saponi people together I think we will see where different pieces fit.
We plan on getting our family trees on a single on-line program so we can see where the pieces all fit together.

Welcome Charles. Glad to have you onboard. All of the Blackfoot locations your mentioning fall in line with what we've heard from others. Kentucky seems to be a common migration path. We've got a pow wow this weekend, so more later when we get back.

So the only data you have on those two was that he was from WV? The Turner name is on the list I have of SE Indian surnames as either Nottoway, Saponi or Meherrin. Richards isn't there, but Richardson is a very prominent Saponi name. Personally, knowing she was reported to be half Blackfoot and connected with WV, I'd be satisfied you'd found the source of her heritage -- the Eastern Siouan of the North Carolina, Virginia Piedmont.

Charles, I forgot to get back to you. So sorry. You have such good info. I have some people in a side branch, myself, I'm sure were Saponi, who came from Culpepper County. What surnames did you have there?
As for the names you listed, Hammond and Cook are on the SE Indian surname list I have. Hammond is frequently Saponi, Cook is frequently Pamunkey.
Are you aware of the Missouri Saponi tribe? I can get you the link if you need it.
As for your photos, send them to me as an attachment and I'll add them to your post. linda@winwinworld.net

I have discovered that there are more possible Blackfoot links in my Family.I am hoping to find others in this forum who may be related to the Burton and Cook families.I believe I may be descended from the Rev War Vet Catawba Tom Cook who moved to VA.Also looking for descendents fo the NC Prince family who later moved to Lawrence County KY.Family legend in the Prince line says they got their name from a "Cherokee" chief named Prince. There were several Cherokees called Prince or Ketagustah in cherokee.I know now that this family came from Surry Co NC and the origin of the name may be Prenchee. This name was used by a Catawba or Cheraw man in the 1700s.I am attaching some photos of my ancestors, and am looking forward to hearing form other members of this forum.
The photos are Henry Creech and Delinda Burton, my gr-gr-gr grandparents. My Grandma told me Delinda was full blooded Native American.{Cherokee}Her brother told me she was Blackfoot.Delinda was born in 1834 in Scott Co VA, and died in Elliot Co KY in 1918.Her death certificate fiiled out by her son in law list her as white. Her mother was Martha Burton daughter of Ameila Cook who was the daughter of a Thomas Cook.
The other photo is of my gr-gr Grandpa John William Prince born in Lawrence Co Ky in 1859.He died circa 1907.He was the son of Thomas Prince and Hanna Terry.I trace the Terry family back to Thomas Terry a trader amoung the Mattaponies 1670-circa 1710.Thomas Terry was in trouble with the VA council in 1707 for "entertaining" a Mattaponi in his home. This family moved to Botetout Co Va around 1740 then on the Floyd/Lawrence Co Ky area circa 1800.As you may know Terry is one of the primary Surnames in the present Monacan tribe.
The other photo is me and my gr-Uncle Zeddie Lyon born 1904 in Elliot Co ky, died 1985, and myself as a youngster in 1976.Zeddie was the grandson of John William Prince and gr-grandson of Delinda Burton.

Welcome Charles, My name is Brenda, I am origionally from Nicholas County, WV. There are Hammond families in the area. They are not my line but I have seen the name on many census records.
As for Cook. My James Spencer's second wife was Mary Cook. They married 1833 after the death of his first wife and he was a widower left with 11 children. Brenda, did you and Charles just contact each other? If not, it's an odd coincidence you should post this just now, since he just contacted me and asked help in uploading these pictures.
Here they are.

Linda, No, I just thought it was odd that while reading his post that I have a file on Prince, Hammond's are found in the same area and I also have a Lyons connection. I would be very interested if he can find a connection to what I posted. My stepfather was Arthur SHOULDERS, his mother was Mary Catherine Prince. Daddy's grandfather was Amos Ritter Shoulders who was a local herb doctor in Lewis County. From what I hear folks came from all over to be treated by him. He was suppose to be one of the best herb doctors in the country. Rumor has it that Amos was half NDN. His mother was ..surname ENGLISH.

Oh, I get it. I read the dates wrong. The posting date is down at the bottom. Charles just posted today and brought this forward. I thought he hadn't posted since May, hahaha, and you just had a psychic moment and up and posted a reply within the same hour I got an email from him asking about the pictures, hahaha. I guess I'm just having another 'stupid day.' :D Just don't ask me what county the Person County Indians are from, hahahahha.
I needed a good laugh.

What I know of my line of Burtons in VA is that I descend from a Samuel Burton born abt 1784 son of a Thomas Burton and Nancy ...? .Samuel Burton married Amelia Cook, dau. of Thomas Cook(believed to have been the Catawba Tom Cook, later associated with the Pamunkey).I believe these Burtons started out in Amelia Co Va before moving to Scott Co, then on into Lawrence/Elliot Co Ky around 1840.
Samuel Burton and Amelia Cook were the parents of Martha Burton.Martha was the mother of Delinda Burton (the woman in the photo that Linda posted for me.)Delinda's father was Henry Sloas.Delinda used the name Burton before being married to Henry Creech, and her death certificate list her maidan name as Burton, and her father as Henry Sloas.
