Hey everyone. I thought I'd start this thread because I do beadwork and am thinking of researching beadwork that may have been connected to the Saponi peoples.

I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be looking for though. So I thought I'd open this thread and if you have any thoughts on the matter you can post them here.

Also if you find any beadwork that would be inspiration for us, or if you have any links to some great beadwork you can post it here.

The beadwork from eastern N.C. tribes is going to be very rare, but I have revived several old files and started researching some old art magz, I know of 2 triangular flap bags ( an envolope style) from the southeast that may be catawba, or atleast Eastern Siouan, so we may have 2 very old items to work from but they were probably made by the same person as both are so close in manufacture that it is atleast probable.
The designs on the bandoliers that these bags are attached to have large block type diamonds on them with spirals and small flower type patterns, colors are red , black and yellow with white beads outlining the ribbons etc, patterns are made by sewing down ribbons into patterns and the outlining the ribbons with beads and finally adding white beads spaced apart like dots.
Just like the dots that make up the patterns on the shell gorgets!

Thanks for the response Tom.

I keep thinking of a book I used to have that I gave away to a friend of mine. Now, I'm kind of wishing I hadn't. It was a book that nothing but old old pictures of NA women from different tribes. Mostly it was just pictures of these women either posing or doing their work.

I can't remember exactly what was in there because it has been at least fifteen years since I gave the book away. I tried to google for what I thought the name was, but all that kept coming up was a book about midwifery. And that isn't what this book was about.

I thought the name of it was 'The Way Of Our Grandmotehrs'. But then I kept getting that midwifery book show up on google. So..oh well. Maybe I can find it in a local library. I would like to look at it again now that I am researching beadwork.

I do have a couple reprints of old beadwork books but the original was pretty poorly done and the information is sketchy at best.

So do you want beadwork designs just from Saponi? Or any of the Eastern Siouan peoples??
