I stumbled on this URL this morning. It may have been posted here previously, but in case it has not, it is interesting, especially considering that my family has the ID Blackfoot Cherokee and came from around Harrisburg, PA. Here it is: http://www.geocities.com/mikenassau/gilbert.htm

Be sure to click on all the links. It includes names associated with surviving NDN and mixed groups.

Which pages mention Harrisburg? I didn't see that. There was a lot of interesting stuff about Virginia, North Carolina groups.

It is certainly interesting to me. My family story is Blackfoot Cherokee, but the Cherokee were not supposed to be in PA where my folks were from. Yet this article says that they were??? Very interesting. I still can't help remembering the primary source document I found that identified some Saponi at an Iroquois negotiation with William Johnson as Chenokee...

I know the Cherokee people in Pa tottaly blew me back for a second, compeling evidence I would say. I am so not an expert but I thought a document like this has been a long time coming. Definetly somethng I am going to do a little more looking into.

I have a map that apeared in Whispering wind mag. about 20 or more years ago of surviving Indian groups of the eastern area of the USA. and this Cherokee group may be listed on it.. I'll try and post a copy of it to lind to add to this thread.

I also think this is an important source to remember.. talk about the Cherokee gets so contentious at times with people insisiting they were only one place or another. I've heard of Cherokee enclaves in Ohio, but never had a source. This one in PA near Harrisburg is interesting from Gilbert's "Surviving Indian Groups...." essay at the link above.

"There is a small group of Indians, apparently of Cherokee descent, residing in the mountains near Harrisburg. Traditionally they are descended from a group of Cherokees who went northward with the Tuscarora in 1710 and stopped in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania. They then took up homesteads in the Blue Mountains from Dublin Gap to directly north of Chambersburg. Since the papers and land titles of this group were burned recently during a quarrel between factions, the neighboring whites have been said to be "moving in" on the lands of these Indians."

This is in the section on groups in PA...
