One of the biggest problems today facing amny of the eastern tribes is how to develope and maintain a style that is true to the old ones.
The use of historical documents is paramount however so is your own personal museum research, by looking at designs on pottery, small carvings etc one can start to 'see" a cultural expression, and by looking at old pieces of material culture will eventually lead to much bigger more correct understanding of design styles.
By Looking at what other tribal groups had and still maintain in a cultural setting this will provide the building blocks for defining a specific look. Remember do not copy some one else's property but look at it and realize that it is thier style so try and see the overall picture in a geographic setting.
This last method is like connecting the dots, if the man's long shirt was worn in the south, east and west of the eastern Siouan people then it most likely was worn by them aswell, and who knows it may have been worn by them first, since the long shirt was adapted from both euro and NDN styles of clothing.
