Sapon1 sent me this link, which I was very glad to see. I've read William Byrd's "History of the Dividing Line Twixt Virginia and North Carolina" and thought while I read it that I would like to see the journey. Here it is, a photo tour of part of that journey, with references to the book.
I'd like someday for a group of us to do a pilgrimage in canoe, up the Dan River. I've crossed over it on highway bridges a few times, and I get a rush from it. Something's calling me. The really interesting thing is, the rivers were our ancestor's highways. They lived along the banks. Those areas are pretty forsaken now. Maybe I'm wrong, and they've been turned into tugboat canals, but I have a hope that at least this one is still in much the same condition as it was then.
Here's the link to the photo tour.
