Just a little FYI, "in our own words." When I was in Canada last week, I bought a book about the Winnebagos in Nebraska. While this autobiography is a recent account I found this passage interesting and it gave me a view of what our families may have done also many years ago:
"It was winter. Everyone had his own camping outfit, and they all made their homes here and there [in Nebraska, a result of removal]...Spring came and mother said that the Winnebago died in great numbers...It seems that many Winnebago went back to Wisconsin. Also, some of the Winnebago lived way out...a great distance from any town. These people said they had not been found so they did not go to Nebraska...not all of the Winnebago left in the removal.
"It must have been at this time that my parents took up land, that is, a homestead..."
The Winnebago men adopted white dress and cut their hair. The women tended to dress with more Winnebago influence. However, Mountain Wolf Woman typically wore her hair brushed back in a bun.
This is from "Mountain Wolf Woman" by Mountain Wolf Woman, edited by Nancy Lurie, University of Wisconsin Press [1961, 1974].
