:D
Hello group! I'm new (or at least I rejoined) this forum to delve back into my family's research. My ancestors are from the counties of Southampton, Hertford, Brunswick, Nottoway and a few other assorted NC and VA counties.
The surnames are Pompey, Archer, Dungey, Rickman, Jeffries, Hawley, Vaughn and Newsome.
I'm sure many of the other posters on this site have knowledge of or even relation to some of these people.
My ancestors mainly migrated to Michigan, going from VA/NC to White County, TN, Gallia, Xenia, Jackson, and Greene Counties in OH, and Whitley Counties in Indiana (especially the Jeffries and Pompeys). For the most part, their final destination was Cass County, Michigan, where I grew up.
I have TONS of documents, wills, deeds, Cherokee Claim records and photos that I'd be willing to share with whoever is interested.
I would also like info on what/where "Free Town" is in the 1810 Brunswick, CO, VA census. That's where some of my ancestors were living in the late 1700's/early 1800's before leaving the south forever.
I would also LOVE to talk with people who have those surnames who's ancestors stayed in the south.
Thanks for reading!
Linda

Welcome Tommy and thank you for the wonderful offer. I would be fascinated to see the paper trail your family has. It's downright famous!
We're having a reunion this weekend for the descendants of "Greentown" in Brunswick, VA. I'm not sure how it relates to Free Town, but there's a very strong history of Indian blooded people there all along. What does the documentation say about "Free Town?" I'll ask around this weekend and see if any of the old timers are familiar with the place.
Do you know Richard Haithcock? Are you still in Michigan?

Hi Linda. I knew that was your pretty face :D It's been a while.
I actually live in Colorado. Since Michigan, I have lived in Minnesota, Oregon and now Colorado.
I also got married July 2003 and had a baby daughter (Sasha) February 2, 2005. She's a DOLL!
Free Town is an actual listing on the 1810 Brunswick County census. It's 2 pages long and ALL of the people living there are listed as "free people of color".
I have never been able to find one person to tell me anything about it. I'm almost wondering if it's the old Fort Christianna that became the "free town" settlement. Why else would there be a whole area in that county of people with last names related to Saponi/Tutelos? But what do I know? :p

Hello Tommy and welcome! I noticed that you have Vaughn listed as a surname could be we are related. My Vaughan ancestors have lived in Virginia and West Virginia since the 1600's for the most part. except when Daniel Tarlton Vaughan moved to Pendleton co. Kentucky in the late 1790's or early 1800's. Then his son Tarlton Vaughan moved back to Virginia around 1840. Again welcome to the forum.

Linda: My ancestor was John H. Vaughn. He was born in VA but I have no idea of his birthdate or year. I'm thinking it was in the 18-teens.
The reason I didn't look much into it was because my g,g grandmother, Sarah Dungey Rickman never married John Vaughn. She only got pregnant by him and had my g, grandfather William H Rickman (notice they both have an H middle name? It was Hansford).
She had an "affair" with this married Vaughn. I do have the census sheet at my house, so I'll get all the details. Daggonit, now you got me thinking about him! I'm going to have to research this guy and get the 411!
Take care.

Hi, Tommy, and Welcome back.
Congratulations to you for both of your DOLLS!
"Inhabitants of free town" are the last 2 pages of Meherrin Township on the 1810 Brunswick Co., Va Census.
There are 29 households containing 112 people, all "Other Free".
Two of the surnames you mentioned were listed:
Wm. Pompey, 1.
Mary Pompey, 4.
Betsey Pompey, 3.
Beckey Pompey, 2.
Aaron Newsom, 4.
.......
There are also 33 'White' households in Meherrin Twp with a total of 80 "Other Free Persons" in them.

Thanks Bill. I have printouts of those pages too, and have always been fascinated the the top left of that page actually said, "Inhabitants of Free Town". You would think there would be something written about a little community with such a name in some history book somewhere. I have yet to find anything on it.
Forest Hazel has given me some info on it, but I sure would like to see something historical. I REALLY need to make a trip to VA and NC one of these days soon just so I can say I've stood in the same places my ancestors stood.

Hi Tommy,
What names do you have in Greene County, Ohio?
My Jones' went there sometime around 1838 - 1841 from Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Some of their children married a Day and a Guy, who were both descendants of Jeffries families. Another one of their children married a Cordel, who came from Lunenburg County, Virginia via Gallia County, Ohio. I have a little more detail at:

I think my Pompey/Jeffries ancestors went through Greene County, OH before they went to Whitley County, IN. I'd have to go through my stack of census records.
However, I'm almost sure of it, as the Jones also ended up going on to Whitley. My g,g,g grandfather Fielding Pompey married a Mahala Jones after his wife Lavina Jeffries died. I seem to remember (and I have a copy of the marriage record) that they were 40 years apart in age.

Hi Tommy and welcome to the forum.
You mention two names that peak my interest.....Vaughn and Newsome.
My main line of research is COLLINS, however, in one branch of my Collins there was a marriage to a VAUGHN. My Meredith Collins settled on a RW land grant in what is today Pike County, Kentucky ( then Floyd Co. KY) I found his military record along with a George, Lewis , & David Collins. If you have read Richard Allen Carlson Jr's disertation it has all four of these men listed as Christian Indians, possibly Saponi but my belief is that they were "mixed Native American".
Meredith settled his claim om Shelby Creek in Kentucky around 1808-1810. Then I found a record of him selling a part of his land to a Harrison NEWSOM(E). In a book on the ROBERTS family I found that Harrison purchased that land from "Indians for money, guns, trinkets, and dogs".
I haven't done much in the past year due to three months stay in the hospital. I hope I have said something that has triggered something that might be of use. Again Welcome.......Bill and Linda I am glad to be back.
