Occoneechee State Park, Va. vs. Occaneechi Village, N.C.

I'm a little confused, maybe someone can help me to better understand the following topic. I have visited the Occaneechi Village, in Hillsborough, N.C. recently. Now I am hearing of the possible golf course at Occoneechee State Park, in Virginia. Which spelling is correct? I assume the N.C. one is, as this came first. I don't know if either one is correct or incorrect. The historical texts differ and the usage has differed between the two states. Considering that the OBSN is now state recognized, it would probably make sense to adopt their spelling.
