I can't remember if I've mentioned here that a friend of mine has told me that he saw documentation, he thinks it was in some records of a VA branch of the London company, about an explorer who found the Sissipaha living on the Dan River (NC/VA border) referred to as the "Blackfoot of the Dan." He says he read that they were raided by the Yamassee and most sold into slavery in Barbardos, the survivors fled to the Occoneechee.
He can't remember any more, and I've already tried looking for London Company records but found nothing so far. He also mentioned the records of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, but I could'nt find anything relating to this early time period. Or it may have been in reference to a treaty made with the London company.
The VA Company of London existed between 1610 and 1625, something like that, which I think is too early for the Yamasee to be involved in slaving. I know they were involved with the Tuscarora being carted off to Barbados in 1713. Perhaps my friend has just misremembered. Also, if they ran off to the Occoneechee, it would have to be before the 1670's when they were squashed and were on the run themselves. Anybody know anything of Yamassee history? I'm trying to figure out how early they were being pressured to involve themselves in all this.
I know how easily memory can get distorted so we can't quote anything about this till we know where the citations are. I'd appreciate any help with this research.
