I just got done reading a really good book and although it was fiction, it might as well have been factual history. The name of the novel is APALACHEE. It's written by Joyce Rockwood Hudson. I highly recommend it.
As a novel, I'd give it a letter grade of "B," primarily because as a guy, I don't particularly care for romantic fiction. However, as a history, I give it an "A+."
The power of the novel is that it marries powerful human emotion to dry historical fact. The book is extremely well researched and is historically accurate; down to the smallest detail. In fact, it even has a bibliography! (I've never read a novel with a bibliography. Non-fiction, sure; but not fiction). And by the way, the bibliography is very good. I'm familiar with about half a dozen books in her bibliography.
Anyhow, if you want to find out about Indian slavery, read this book. Although Ms. Hudson deals with a Florida tribe, the Apalachee, it could just as easily have been the Saponi, Tuscarora, or the Cherokee. Here's the link.
