I was reading a little more of your history article on your site, Rick, about the Big Sandy earlier known as Tutery River. This reminded me of something I noticed a long time ago that I've wondered about, and maybe you know. There's a town in Ohio called Tuscarawas. Does this indicate a early occupation of Tuscarora in Ohio? I read of it in connection with Heckewelder's history, and at that time there were Delaware there.

Do you know anything about this?

Linda, I can answer that question, Yes, there were Tuscarora people in Ohio. They were near the towns of present day New Philadelphia and Dover and Tuscarora county bears the tribes name today. Also they were listed in the Royce area maps.

Hello Vickie;

Would that be Canel Dover, Ohio or are they two different towns in two different counties? Does the surnames BENNETT & COTTRELL have any meaning to you?

Hello Vikki, welcome. Thanks for the reply. Do you know the time period? Do you know of any descendants still around those places?

Carries Water, I was just looking at your site again and I have some questions. In the lists of surnames in the last half of the document, I'm curious how you've identified these people. Do you know these families and know from their family lore that they're likely Saponi descended?

I know that NDN families were frequently listed as mullato, colored, or black. What I'm curious about are all the families who were NDN descended but categorized as white. Perhaps the way to do that is simply collect data from people with family stories and see what patterns emerge. There sure isn't likely to be much of any documentation.
