Turner,
What counties in NC are you speaking of? I descend from Turners of Northampton/Halifax Counties NC.

hey rosebuds,
i'm not sure off hand. i just moved, so everything is packed away. but over the weekend i will unpack it and post wat i find.
all i remember off hand is that rebecca wolf was from NC sometime in the 1700 - 1800's. her daughter, leona (koon) married a turner from england...
everything in my family is really messed up. miss spelling of names. some of the family was counted as slaves on senses records. its just weird cuz, we're "blackfoot". but yet we have no family thats ever been outwest or came from outwest.
if only my great aunt or my grandmother was still alive......
i'll get back to you soon on that tho. tell me more about your family..

thanks bily childs, glad to be here : )
ya im' looking though some stuff now. i bout Ancestry.com for a few months. and i remember that some of the family was from Nc and PA. but every record i say had the race as WHITE. and thast another thing that confuses me...
my father won't talk about anything either. all he ever tells me is that "we don't have another time tonite to talk about it" or "i don't know anything". my grand mother and aunt mary know it all. my aunt mary knew of everyhing and had records of it.
My father inrolled with the NAICC (North American Indian Culture Center) which is nothing big. But at the time, back in 1981, they were suppose to help you become federaly inrolled. He was listed as 65% half mix with Blackfoot and Cherokee.
I'm sure I sound like any old guy who says theres indian in them. And frankly i don't even care of i'm enough to beome inrolled. I just have this lurking feeling that i need to search. My somehow find who i am, find out my past, and write something...
I'm going to look up somemore info and post as soon as i get some names and locations. I'll share as much information as i have.
Thanks :)

A census taker's job was pretty difficult. On very early census records there were often only two racial categories for "free" people: White and Black (various terms applied). Later, "Mulatto" was added. "Indian" was not a category until the 1900s altho some were properly identified very early on.
Imagine you're a census taker and coming across an Indian family (or mixed-Indian family) and trying to decide if they were White or Black?! And there were also Black-Indian mixed blood families. But, you're a census taker and get paid a penny or two for every soul you can count in the county..... hmmm.... $Cha-Ching, "I'll squeeze 'em in somewhere". There are too many reasons to list for marking a person's "race", depending on time and place, that census records can't be taken seriously. In sum, census record listings usually just recorded the "whimsical judgement" of the census taker and the bureaurcratic disconnect of their time and place.

wow i never really looked at it in that respect. not knowing alot about that time, i did notice that when it come across "racial categories" either it wasn't marked or there was an "W" or an "N". Its hard to tell because of how old it really is.

Well, Turner, dig your stuff out and let's see what we can do with it. Don't expect to find any people listed as "Indian". It rarely happened. I'd suggest that when you get your stuff unpacked and in order, start a "new thread" with a specific name and list in the body of the new posting, the location, their dates, known children and known or suspected parents. Every little bit of information helps sort it out.
By the way, we're not a "Federally Recognized Nation" so there is no "enrollment", that being a typically divisive european concept.

Bill says >>>> Recognized Nation" so there is no "enrollment", that being a typically divisive european concept
Yep..... we are what we are..... discovering that, ......being proud of it .......and honoring the ancestors is what this forum is about.
Having to show a card to prove what you are is nonsense. Learning who you are and where you come from is priceless.
peace.... and welcome
