View Full Version : Political Boundaries?
I'm in Central VA and I've heard some say that the Saponi were once a tribe/subtribe of our local Monacan Confederacy.
I've also been to the Occaneechi website and they talk of a Saponi Confederacy which included the Saponi proper,Eno,Occaneechi,Tutelo, and other
Eastern Sioux groups.
Could someone help me understand the Piedmont Sioux political boundaries a little better or point me towards some websites that might help?
Thank You :)

There are some historical accounts that saw/named the Siouan confederacy of the Piedmont as Monacan. Most of the historical accounts, however, call these nations the Saponi. This came about ca. the 1720's when the remnants of these tribes were at Fort Christanna. The governor tired of all the names and dubbed them all "Saponi." The historical references followed suit, in the Upper South, at least. The Canadian/NY Iroquois, to which many of these people fled, called them Todericherones, or Tutelo. It may well be that the group that was adopted by the Cayuga up there really were the Tutelo proper, or maybe they got lumped together under that name.
As a group, traditionally, we called ourselves "Yesah" meaning "the people." I believe that many descendants in later years called themselves "Blackfoot," particularly those who migrated into Appalachia and the Midwest. Have I confused you more?

Linda,
I don't know if you confused Roca or not, but you verified what was in my head. Thank you so much for that! Roca, Thank You for posting this. I've been a little confused about the Cayuga up in Canada. So it's been nagging in the back of my mind. Again, thank you so very much, both of you!:) Lynella.
