Vance,
I found where my 4th great grandfather Henry George sr. Had a brother named William C. George who married a lady by the name Mary ann Hawkins. Here is the info on that.
William C. George B. 1798 Pendleton co. West Virginia
D. 1875 Champaign, Illinois
married !816 in Hampshire, Virginia
Mary Ann Hawkins B. 1798 Virginia
D. 1854 Champain, Illinois
Their son Thomas George married Betts Collins. He was born Pendleton co. West Virginia 1826. She was born 1822.
I was thinking that there might be a connection there with our families.

Hi -- and thanks.
Do you know anything about Mary Ann's brothr's and sisters?
Bill has been helping me with some things, but there still isn't anything certain yet, but there are possible clues, for which I am very appreciative. All we know is Joshua Allen Hawkins was
1. A Confederate Civil War veteran. There is a Joshua A. Hawkins listed as being in the 8th Regiment, Conf, from Arkansas.
2. He was b. 1837, Alabama, d. 1892, Milam County, Tx. 3. They are also found in Williamson and Falls County, Tx.
3. Since grandpa was Noah Allen Hawkins, I think the Allen surname might fit in somewhere, maybe Joshua's mother's maiden name?? Also one brother had the middle name 'Benjamin" and there was a Creek Indian Agent (who also had Creek and Cherokee children) named Benjamin Hawkins.
4. His wife was Elizabeth Maryann Byrum, b. NC. She was born in the 1850s if i recall it right, and she died in 1926 in Texas. Dad (1915-1992) said he saw her once as a kid and said his grandma Hawkins was "a great big red headed woman".
5. Was told some one said he had 3 brothers and a sister, Thomas, John and William, and Mary. This was in apparently rcorded in a family Bible, but I have nevr seen this Bble.

Vance, No I don't know anything yet. You might try going to the Hawkins family forum on the net. Then type in the names you are looking for. I have had some succes by going to family forums before. Let me know if you find anything.
Vance and Waitman,
I'm real interested in vance getting to find Joshua Allen's parents too. Was it Elizabeth Maryann Byrum or maryann Elizabeth Byrum?
I had it written as Maryann Elizabeth Byrum born Jan 13 1849 in NC. Is there any connection to St Clair Co Alabama? And did you hear of the book by Verbon Swann on the Hawkins family? I figured you probably did. Book in the archives in Ashville Al.
Waitman, the Waid surname, is it Wade too? I have Wade tying into Hunts and allens.
Vance, I found too that William Allen, and now I can't find it, but he was in my line, that he traded land to be adjacent to James McDaniel in NC for a few years and then traded back. And there was a William Allen that was an Indian trader, but I know nothing of his ancestry, if he connects or not. Or if he could be the same person.
Bill will solve this mystery if anyone can!

Waitman --
Thanks. Yeah, I used to look at tha site and ask a few questions. I found a couple of other descendants of the family from other great uncles and aunts. They found the Byrums in North Carolina, but for the present I forget which county. I even found descendants of one of her brother's.
I have another hard drive on another computer and for the present I can't access those files. I am gonna install that hard-drive onto this computer so I can access those files. At that point I can tell you more about those Byrum's.
Sue --
Seems like her name was Elizabeth Maryann, but I could be wrong. Again, when I can access those files again I an state more accurately. Now I am going on memory.
That date, Jan 13 1849 in NC, sounds about right. St Clair County, Al, was probably about the border between the Creek and Cherokee Nations, but earlier had been the heart of the Creek Nation. It was rather late in history that the Cherokee moved down into Alabama, as their lands near Knoxville and in SC were taken away their people had to move somewhere, and they moved down into N Alabama. Why do you think of St. Clair County. Someone else mentioned that county wrt our family, but I don't recall where i heard it. Probably one of those Hawkins boards I think.
Allen is a very common Chickasaw and Creek surname, but not so common amongst Cherokee. Don't know about Choctaw. There are several McDaniels in North Alabama that married into some of my Gist's (various spellings). McDaniel is also a common Cherokee surname.
I don't know anything about a Veron Swann book. Dad did have an uncle that he called "Uncle Swaney", but that was on the Richey side of the family, not the Hawkins. Sue, there are so many Hawkinses and some came to the US in the 17th, some in the 18th, some in the 19th century, all unrelated to one another as far as I can tell. Some came from England, some from Ireland, and I'd imagine Scotland and Wales too. There were 'Royal" Hawkinses -- Sir/Admiral John Hawkins was a contemporary of sir Francis Drake and helped destroy the Spanish Armada in 1588, and there are Hawkins who were of the lowest class as well. Even in the UK they appear unrelated. so I am skeptical, found so many blind alleys. But maybe thta is a book that will have something we can use, so thanks.
I appreciate the help. I have to warn yall we've been looking into this many years and never found anything. But ya never know . . . . I've pretty much given up on finding anything. It's harder to give up on it with others -- like yall (and Bill) -- thinking about us, tho.
thanks

Vance,
I had typed in Joshua Allen Hawkins, into several places, and end up in St. Clair Alabama..From there I ended up with a couple of messages from people, one mentioning the book and who to contact.
I just contacted her..she is in the archives of st. clair al museum.
She is going to see what she can find. Maybe a long shot but who knows?
I feel kind of like giving up too sometimes on my direct Allen line. I find all kinds of info on siblings..I've yet to figure out who all the children of the direct married..etc. And like you with Hawkins, there are so many Allen ancestors. I have been searching for years and still have some real dead ends.
But I love the searching!
Take care,
sue J:)

Sue, I had seen that post before, but for some reason I gave up on it. I never saw that response to it, tho -- about contacting someone in St Clair County, so I must have visited that site after 1999 and before the responseto it in 2002.
First said --
JOSHUA ALLEN HAWKINS born about 1837 in Branchville(?), St. Clair County, Alabama. Father is URANINUS HAWKINS from South Carolina. Joshua died in 1892 in Milam County, Texas. Had Siblems: Larkin, William, Joe and Polly.
end of quote --
My information said he had brothers Thomas, William and John and a sister Mary. This mentions a brother named William and a sister Polly, which is Mary, so 2 of the four names are the same. If I recall right I tried looking for these people on the census and never found them so I gave up. But information is easier to get now.
Now I see why you mentioned that book -- it specifically was for the person asking about Joshua Allen Hawkins!
Yall are so kind.
thanks

Vance, I found a Joshua tracy amos Hawkins listed in the 14th West Virginia infantry. If you want to check it out there is a lot of information about the unit there. Just go to google search engine then type in hawkins in West Virginia. Then scroll down to hawkins in Military. It is an interesting site.

I got a hold of that guy who wrote those Hawkins books in Alabama and here is what he told me --
Hello Vance:
They are right. There is a book in the St. Clair County, AL archives
that was written by me. In fact there are two Hawkins books.
The Joshua Hawkins you quote (1837-1892) does not appear
in any of the files that I have. He is more than likely a son of
one of the branches that has not been fully researched. Most
of the Hawkins I have seen never made it as far as Texas.
One of my Hawkins books has most of the main Hawkins line
that came from Kent, England around 1600 to America. If
you don't have anything at all, it would give you a good place
to start.
Since you know his birthdate, it would be a good idea to do
a search of the 1850 Census indexes to find him 13 years old
in somebody's household.
Gene

So I still don't know -- all we know is b @ 1837 Alabama is what it says on the census records. It might not even be in St Clair County.

Sue,
They seem to have spelled it both ways. I have noticed that the further back I go the more it is spelled Wade.

I was reading a deed in a courthouse here where it started out Wade and at the bottom of the page they had spelled it Waid.

Gene Swann just emailed me again and said --
Hello Vance:
This latest information you sent me about an email authored
by a "Jessie" sheds more light on who we are looking for.
The time frame 1837, place Branchville, St. Clair is a match
with the Larkin Hawkins family. Larkin, Joe and Polly is a match.
The father of Larkin Hawkins, 1794-1875, is Frederick Hawkins.
In the Frederick Hawkins family, there are Larkin, Joseph, William
and Allen born 1774. [Joshua Allen Hawkins?]
The only place where the 1837 time frame and Branchville
is a match is with the Larkin Hawkins, (1794-1875) family
in Branchville, St. Clair County, AL. as stated above.
??maybe?? A little squeemish about gettin my hopes up . . . but maybe . . . :)

I saw Larkin Hawkins on a census and there is absolutely no evidence of a son named "Joshua".

1880 Robertson County, Tx census
[name, age, b. p (birth place), b.p. of father, b.p. of mother]
Joshua A Hawkins, 45, Al, Al, Al
Mary E., 30, NC, NC, NC
James A, 12,Tx, Al, NC
Wm E, 10, Tx, Al, NC
Chas. W., 8, Tx, Al, NC
Henry B., 6, Tx, Al, NC
Noah A., 3, Tx, Al, NC
1860 census, Robertson Co., Tx
Joshua Hawkins, 23, laborer, b. Ala. Head of this house hold is James L Moss (looks like Mofs, but that's how they wrote double s in those days), with wife Jane, both 44 years old. POB of both Mosses is listed as Ky. Two others are in the household, John ?Breveau? or ?Preveau? -- i can't make the name out but it looks French, maybe Cajun seein as how it says he was b. La, age 24, laborer, and William Taylor, 12, b. Tx who is given no "profession" in the census.
==================
Maybe I should look for James L Moss in 1850 census???
